Look At This Old Gibson

Recommended Posts

This photo is from a magazine ad my wife found in an advertising trade rag. Even she was fascinated by this old Gibson (I've taught her well). Anybody even see anything like this before? What a beautiful and interesting instrument.

Orville Gibson turned out a few pieces with that wierd shape - my favourite was much the same as that one, but with some harp like arrangement of 12 chromatic bass strings out to the left of the neck as seen from the front. Played it in an instrument museum someplace - guitar neck played nicely, harp strings took a bit of geting used to (I would imagine - never had enough time to get accustomed.....)

Big Bill Broonzy used to play one of these (or at least held one for this portrait).

Added: I got curious, and found other photos of an even-younger Big Bill holding this guitar when it was shiny and new, so it's not just a photo prop.

I've only played one of these, about 15 or 20 years ago. To be honest, it didn't sound particulary good. Still, I wish that I had bought it. Very, very cool.
