New J-45 Standard Features

The thread on on-line stores led me out to the Janet Davis music site, which I hadn't looked at for quite a while. Looking at the description of the current J-45's (http://www.janetdavismusic.com/gibson_j45.html) I notice this in the description, "Equipped with active electronics with sound hole mounted volume control."

I have a 1995 J-45 with an undersaddle pickup but no volume control. Looking at the picture on the Janet Davis site, I don't see a sound hole mounted volume control. Where exactly would this be located?

The larger question this raised for me is just how different a current 2011 Gibson J-45 is from earlier Bozeman versions. I realize there are lots of J-45 variations, but this appears to be a write-up for a standard J-45. Can anyone who owns a new one enlighten me to the main differences?

My 2007 J-45 has the sound hole volume knob. Located just inside the sound hole on the bass side where you can adjust it with your little finger. The actual Model # is RS45VSNH1. It has the orange label so I don't know if it is a standard or modern classic. I know the newer Modern Classic or standard has the white label. Hope that helps you.

Hey Tom - Yeh the knob (a little wheel) is placed in the sound holes 9 o'clock position (the neck being 12). I have a 1 year old Standard with black nut and white label and it sounds so good. It's pretty close to the later models, but if you go further back things will begin to differ - neck style, maybe bracing, would like to know about the sound. Ok, "in the sound hole" is the key. When I read that description on the JD site, I was imagining some of the old Gibsons I see from time to time with volume controls mounted on the face of the guitar. I don't know if those were ever installed at the factory or if they were aftermarket add-ons, but I'm sure glad the current ones are discreetly placed inside the sound hole.
