First show last night with my relic'ed IB-64 Texan....

Played my first show last night with my recently "relic'ed" IB'64 Texan and wow. It was a coffeehouse gig. The plugged-in sound floored me. The venue had a Bose L1 sound system and so the sound I was hearing on the stage was the same as what folks in the room were hearing, and it was one of those shows where sometimes you get lost in a song because you catch yourself listening to how good your guitar sounds. Don't know if you've ever had those moments, but I have.

For whatever reason, the Bose L1 system (which was really easy to work with) seems to make the most of the Shadow Sonic NanoFlex pickup in the guitar. The thing sounded good on hard strumming and on my fingerstyle stuff.

I've discussed the "aging" process of the guitar in length elsewhere so I won't rehash it here, but the only thing I can add to it is that the guitar has mellowed in a stunning fashion since I had it done. It sounded fine beforehand, but thinning the finish has turned it into a different animal. The sound has a lot more character, depth and even, oddly, sustain.

I took along my '98 J-45 last night (always take a back-up guitar for out-of-town gigs...) and it is a great guitar, but I didn't even pull it out of the case. I was enjoying the sound of my IB'64 so much. This guitar is really a winner.

I've played out with mine even more since then. I'm really liking that Shadow NanoFlex. My only real beef with it -- and this probably isn't a problem for you righties -- is that I can never tell which direction to roll the volume wheel. I always get confused. The control unit is positioned on the soundhole's left edge (looking at the guitar from the front) and so for a lefty like me, I can look down and see it. I wound up cutting a small triangular piece of self-adhesive paper and stuck it on the control unit so the thin edge of the triangle points in the direction you'd roll the wheel to lower the volume, and the bigger side of the triangle points in the direction you roll the wheel to increase the volume.

Once I got all that sorted out, it's a great pickup, well-matched for the guitar. No idea what it would sound like on other instruments. Every sound guy I've had, though, has remarked on the sound.
