I always have three things on my person when I'm out. Wallet with a spare car key inside (incase I lose my keys or lock my keys in my car). Keyring with keychain that holds guitar picks, and a fold out key-knife. And Cellphone which holds the rest of my important stuff anyway. Anything else is in the car or at home.

I do take a bookbag to work with me though, for my bagged lunches and work keys.

Typically I only need to use my pockets to carry stuff. I don't really carry that much around. Let's see, right now, in my pockets are: a utility knife, my key chain (house and practice space keys hooked to a guitar pick holder and bottle opener), my wallet, and my cell phone.

I usually have headphones and an mp3 player with me too, but those end up in either jacket pockets in the winter, or the giant side pockets on my cargo shorts in the summer.

When I'm going to be on public transportation for more than 5 - 10 minutes I'll bring a long a book, which, depending on the size of the book and weather conditions, may mean I need a bag of some sort. I also grab a bag if I'm running around buying gear or music or something, to make it easier than hanging on to a bunch of plastic bags.

And yes my bag is a messenger bag/satchel/man purse (murse). Call it what you will, I don't care. I won't wear backpacks. They're too cumbersome.

Case in point:

There are people up here in Boston, mostly students, some commuters, who ride the T with their giant backpacks. Most of them are blissfully unaware of where their backpacks are and how every time they sway with the train their backpack slams me in the arm or something. Usually annoying, sometimes painful. Getting smacked in the back of the head with a backpack full of college textbooks is no fun. At least with the murse you can swing it around the front and hang on to it so you're not hitting your fellow passengers with it all the time. Never had a problem with the murse wearers, only people with backpacks.
