powerwagonjohn
I have a 1966 SG Jr and it has the short tremolo. The bridge will some times move away from the mounting studs with the tremolo installed. I think it's because of the height of the stop tail piece is only slightly shorter than bridge and there is little down force. Is this a common problem? I think the guitar is all stock as far as I can tell. I have no experance with locking bridges but would this help my problem? For now I have taken the tremolo off and am just using the wrap around bridge/tail piece which I think is stock. any comments would be great. colin4195
The screws in the tremolo have probable probable stripped the wood, and are now pulling away. It depends on the type of tremolo though. if it is mounted in the stop bars screws, replace the springs in the trem. they are only good so long

rcscruff
Yes, a locking bridge will solve that. Just this weekend I had a locking bridge installed on my sg special for the exact same problem. I used a TonePros intonatable style bridge. I looks a little strange, more like the 70s style harmonica bridge. But it has infinitely improved playability. If you want to keep it stock there are a couple of fixes as well. You can sacrifice your action and just raise the bridge to put that pressure back on the strings. Or you can sacrifice your vibrato and just use the bridge as a wrap-around tail. My luthier also mentioned that a neck reset will solve that problem, by putting the neck back at the correct angle in relation to the bridge and tail. Unfortunately that is also the most expensive option.
powerwagonjohn
Thanks for all the information. It has the short tremolo but I have it removed for now. I do miss the wammy bar sometimes. It is a 1966 SG Jr. and is a real basic guitar, especally with out the wammy bar. It's real light and just screams through my 1966 Fender Tremolux amp. Thanks John PS: I know, I know, I need to post some photos!!
