Jack6849
I just made a deal with Dave Rogers at Dave's Guitar Shop in La Crosse, Wisconsin to get the new Gibson Jackson Browne Model 1 that they recently received. That's the version of the guitar without the pickup system. Since I don't play acoustic guitar on stage, I was happy to learn that this all-acoustic version of the guitar was being offered. (Its MSRP is a lot more "reasonable" than the version with the electronics...) Two weeks ago, I played the Jackson Browne "Model A" (the version WITH the pickup system) acoustically in La Crosse, and while, at first, I thought the guitar felt a bit "strange" with its increased body depth and 12 fret neck, I very quickly came to appreciate its great playability and its amazing tone, which had truly awesome clarity and bass response. It also has a nut width of 1.805", which, for me, will be ideal for finger-picking. I asked Laun Braithwaite at Dave's to play their newly-arrived "Model 1" and compare it "acoustically" for me to the "Model A" they already had in stock. When Laun said that, if anything, this "Model 1" might just be acoustically superior to the "Model A" (with which I was already familiar), I jumped on it immediately. All Jackson Browne acoustics have Adirondack Spruce tops with scalloped Adirondack top bracing and hide glue neck joints. The "Model A" that I played was beautiful and, after some "getting used to" I found it to be a joy to hold and to play. I'll be driving up from Iowa to Wisconsin next week to pick it up. If anybody else has one, has played one, or knows anything about this new Jackson Browne model guitar, I'd be interested in your comments. Thank you, Jack6849

brians356
I have another prototype, but I believe it is walnut (I could be talked out of that, but it sure doesn't look like RW.) Since the Model A uses the "Trance Audio Amulet True Stereo Guitar Pickup System" I assume it does not have an under-saddle transducer. But the soundboard-mounted "Acoustic Lens" transducers may well impact the acoustic response somewhat. Brian
Jack6849
Thanks BK... I don't know how I got those two duplicate threads, and I don't know how to get them off the board. Sorry. Thanks also for your initial replies... I'm really looking forward to playing my Jackson Browne "Model 1" a lot. All your comments are appreciated. dhanners623
I've not played the Jackson Browne but I have been to Dave's and it is one of the best guitar shops in the Midwest, if not the country. It is one of those places where you walk in the door and realize you're going to be busy for the next several hours. Plus, La Crosse probably has more bars per capita than about any other city in the country....
zombywoof
Don't know anything about hte guitar but I agree with the above - Dave's is a great shop.

jannusguy2
This is my prototype. I can't see much difference btwn it and the final version, cosmetically. Maybe the tuners are different. Of course the Walnut vs Rosewood is significant.

Jack6849
I can't wait.... I mean it.... I can't wait. I'm leaving for La Crosse in about fifteen minutes, heading to Dave's Guitar Shop to pick up my "Jackson Browne Signature Model 1". Gibson calls it "the Grand Piano of Acoustics"... yeah... well, I guess we'll just have to see about that. Wish me luck... Jack6849
fp
Jack I'm a big fan of walnut for acoustic guitars. I've built two and have plans for another. Can't wait to see pictures of the back of yours !

Jack6849
Hey, It's about 9:45 p.m. and I'm back from Wisconsin with my new "Jackson Browne Model 1". So new, in fact, that the lacquer smell is overwhelming. I'll try to take and post some pix (front and back) this weekend if I can remember how that's done.... In the meantime, how about a string recommendation for this guitar. I usually use Martin 80/20 Bronze "Light Gauge" sets substituted with an .014 B and and an .011 E. In this case, with the short 24.75" scale length, wide 1.805" nut, and the increased body depth, I was thinking about perhaps trying some "Medium Gauge" strings on the low end. I might even try a phosphor-bronze set just to see how they would sound on it. jannusguy2 and brian365... which strings do you think sound best on your prototype guitars? Anybody with an opinion, I'm looking for suggestions. I don't usually use phosphor bronze, but I do have some ready to go... Martins and DR Sunbeams, I believe. Walnut sides and back... Adirondack top.... no electronics... Thank you, Jack6849

Jack6849
(Danner), Okay, I'll look into the pix tomorrow then, and thanks for the interest, I really appreciate it. (Hi,Karen), After reading your note, the first song I did was dedicated to you. I hope you don't mind. The only Jackson Browne song I could think of right off was "Running On Empty", which after eight hours of driving (to Wisconsin and back..), I certainly am. I'll soon think of other JB tunes, which I promise also to play with you in mind. Thanks for the inspiration. I used to do a lot of Jackson Browne stuff, along with loads of Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Karla Bonoff, and J.D. Souther material. They were all so great. This Gibson "Jackson Browne Signature - Model 1" acoustic is an extremely well-made guitar. Not real fancy ("bling-wise", that is..) but its craftsmaship is obvious and undeniable. "Master-built", with a certificate signed by Ren Ferguson himself... How cool. I will try to be worthy of it. Thanks for the notes, Jack6849

I think JB is one of the best songwriters this century has seen. And he has the best guitar collection too. I love Running On Empty, and so many of his songs. Eight hours of driving? You'll sleep well tonight, and then you can enjoy your new guitar!

livemusic
I have Elixir 12s on mine. If you really want the full on JB experience, go with the mediums and tune down 2 full steps. That's what he does... Two full steps... you mean four half steps? Just clarifying. Meaning, instead of E to E, C to C? What do you know about that? I would think he might do that on a given song or two, but not all. I know he uses a lot of different tunings. I would think a guitar would have to undergo a special setup to play C to C. I like to tune down 1/2 step and even one whole step.

nid2007
Congrats on that guitar! I hope to play one soon. I use d,addario ej-19 on all my Gibsons. I recommend trying it out....it is essentially mediums on the bass strings and lights on the high strings..work especially well when your guitar is tuned to open d sharp--which is a tuning that works nice for certain JB solo acoustic arrangements like I'm Alive and My Stunning Mystery Companion.
