NGD: Aaron Lewis Southern Jumbo !!

So there you have it ... all my rationalisation why not to get another Gibson went out the window when GAS really hit.

I went back to the store in the afternoon (its only 5 mins from work) this time with my own pick, tuned to pitch, capo and also plugged into a Marshall AS50, and I was floored..

This guitar just has it all, amazing tone, playability, superb plugged in and looks just, well, stunning.

The tone is vintage J-45 in my book, i made a quick sound sample, what do you think ?

I also recieved a 'plaque' signed by the man, Ren Ferguson stating is model 137 of 413 produced.

Pics also attached, next step is a Colosi bone pins and saddle, and cant wait to take it to the next gig. Having a fishman infity pup is ideal as I have this on my othr guitars and will combine ideally with the Sectrum DI.

This is a great day .... now i need to explain this to Mrs Euroassie when she returns from the pub !

Ah, its a beautiful day .. :-))

! Prague Spring !

Hey EuroA - I'm exited for you and fully understand your move. The guitar sounds and looks beautiful. Is it the semi gloss finish, , , and what strings do we hear.

Look forward to more samples (don't forget to give us a bass-treat).. .

Once again – Banners up for you. . .

Actually spring has hit in Prague !

Seriously, thanks for your arm twisting when i was in Egypt, made me think about it a lot, and then when this SJ came it just took me ove the edge ...lol ..

Now, strings, I assume its the Gibson Masterbuild PB 12's as they seem to be standard on acoustics from the factory, this guitar only arrived in the shop 4 days ago. Is it semi gloss finish, to be honest i dont know whats the difference between full and semi gloss ? But she's pretty glossy and shiny if that helps ..?

Actually here are the specs from the Gibson site on this model.

Vintage Sunburst

Sealer Standard: Hand Sprayed Nitrocellulose Lacquer

Aged: Hand Sprayed Nitrocellulose Lacquer, Aged and Distressed

Fine to see them in a row. Now we need GG to count those pearlellograms.

Just put Gibson Masterbuild PB 12's on my 45 today. Not as loud as the Mart. PB's, but right now they sound so velvet-mellow honey sweet. Guess they have to be on a few days before I can a judgement.

Oouuuhh, what's that saddle on the C&W ?

I found the Gibson MB's are great for a few days but die really quickly. I will be putting DR Sunbeams on the SJ soon just like the other mahongay guitars. Find the tone to be very similar to the Gibby strings but last a helluva lot longer. Just a question if it will be 12's or 13's. I use 13's on the CW as it needs the extra tension to give the top a good kick due to the thicker bracing (as you mentioned yourself, thanks for the insight). I think i will stick with lights as it really sounds great right now.

With the CW saddle, that was the only alteration to the original features on the CW. The dealer (Umanov guitars NYC) replaced the adjustable saddle and placed a bone saddle. Its a big saddle but seems to do the job and there is no issue with it..

Okay – yeah, I'm pretty far into those. A bit of an issue here. Have 6 versions :

Rosewood

Ceramic

Tusq

Rosewood with ordinary sized bone saddle-inlay (SJ 68)

Rosewood with 2/3 bone and 1/3 wood ordinary saddle

Pure ivory (which I just put in the SJ 63)

Only one missing is the big all bone model.

Have some 12-54's Sunbeams too (bought on your recommendation last year) - might retry them soon.

It looks overwhelming he he, but I have more saddles than horses.

In fact I got 4 Gibsons :

SJ 63

C&W 66

SJ 68

J-45 Standard 2010

The SJ's keep me experimenting with the adjustable saddles/inlays. Being a newbie on G.'s, it's a sensitive and slightly weird topic for me.

I more than dig all 4 sweethearts though.

Besides that there's a smaller flock of other brands. A couple of Martins, 1 Guild etc.

Thanks Stubee, and the great thing is i can still hear a lot of potential in it. I find new mahogany guitars need a bit of time to settle down and warm up, usually around 6 -12 months of decent playing. Then you get that lovelly honey warm tone coming through ... of course i would also be curious how she will sound in 40 years ...lol ..

cheers !

That is a beautiful guitar & it sounds great!

Nice, very nice!!! Welcome to the wonderful world of Southern Jumbos!!! The look, feel, and tone of these beauties can only be descibed by playing one! (which you obviously have done and was smitten by it!) I find myself grabbing my TVSJ every time I play now. Great looking guitar and it's really gonna look good onstage at the HardRock! Just try to keep that smile in check so you don't blind the audience!!!

Thanks a lot Larry, yes it will be a tough decision whether to take the SWD or the SJ when we play the Hard Rock.

My 'logic' as I always try to compartmentalise things (so ive been told a few times) is that the SWD works very well at the big venues when there is a 2nd guitarist playing and i need a strong, driving rhythm. I was thinking more with the SJ for smaller pub bigs with just the singer to get that real woody, tight, intimate tone of the SJ through ..

But what the heck, ill just take both to the hard rock and switch between rock and country ! :-)

IMHO, a mahogany Gibby is THE best guitar for a strong, driving rhythym guitar. The SJ fits the bill perfectly! And records even better! Hats off to ya!!!

Congrats, EuroAussie. I'm glad you found another guitar you like so much. Looks like a beauty.

Out of curiosity, did you know who Aaron Lewis was before you bought the guitar, and did it matter to you? I'm asking because when the guitar was announced last fall, there was some typical (and frankly amusing to me) outrage on the forum that he would get or deserved a signature guitar, that it was priced too high, that the world didn't need another iteration of the SJ, etc.

Thaanks a lot Red, and to answer your question, honestly, I had no idea who Aaron Lewis was.

But also, i quickly youtubed him and have to say very quickly became a fan. I knew at the very least that its a tone that Im very much attracted to and I like his music, and his covers.

However i didnt buy the guitar becase of Aaron Lewis. I chose the guitar really based primarily tone, secondarily the fact that Ive always wanted a slope shoulders, sunburst Gibson, and this is the one that was ...the one.

Just getting back to Aaron, Im sort of glad it wasnt a Johnny Cash or Elvis Presley edition as that probably would work a lot against buying the guitar, and in reality there is not much of his 'presence' in the look of the guitar other than a small image on the truss rod cover (which can easily be replaced). The fact that its based on his 51' SJ specs, is something that I really find much more appealing, I like this approach much, much more !

cheers.

I had a bit of time so i quickly recorded another sound sample, a little longer, and a little harder.

Last one was slow flatpicking, this one is more harder country strumming in dropped D tuning. I think this ones straight from the heart of Southern Jumbo country.

I was further away from the mike this time also, but must say this Gibson really does sound big and how I imagine an 'SJ' should sound.

Hope you enjoy it any feedback welcome as always !

cheers.
