Lungimsam
Which would you pick: swirl in grain: http://www.sweetwater.com/guitargallery/electric/custom/s102010487 straight grain: http://www.sweetwater.com/guitargallery/electric/custom/s102010516
Gaolee
I don't think it would make a difference. The grain you are seeing is just where the board was cut out of a log. I would take the one with straighter looking grain, because I think it looks better, not because it would sound any different or be any more durable. If you look at the photos, you will see it has a bit of the same kind of thing going on with the grain but on the back instead of the front. Kelvinator
I don't know if it would make any noticeable difference in the sound. My SG-RI has very tight straight grain and sounds great, but I've never A-B'd it with another. Are you gonna pull the trigger on one from Sweetwater??? I would. You'd probably have it this week! Grog
Get what you like! This is a picture of a 1966 EB-0 that I traded off a couple years back, it had kind of a weird pattern in the mahogany. The wood that was concidered less desireable was used on the basses.
MrNylon
I would go with the fancier grain. I really don't think the grain pattern dictates sounds, as much as the actual type of wood.
Lungimsam
I am thinking of Sweetwater, but they look a little orangy to me. My patience has almost run out, and with reports from others of waiting 6 months for their axes from Gibson, I am starting to turn to ordering something online. Thanks for the great info, all. I kind of like the swirly patterns. @Grog: Thanks for posting the photo. Neat pattern. Looks kind of like a "rained-on" pattern. That's funny that they used the "less desirable" woods for basses, but still took the time to do the nice deep beveling. Those bevels are what make those '60's EB's so sweet! The pics from Sweetwater, could be tinted by the light where they are taking the pics. Consider ordering one of your choice. If you're not thrilled with it, return it. You've got nothing to lose by it. You may get a bass that looks very std. as finishes go from the pic, and love it. The pics look pretty darn good to me. Serial # 102010487, I think is the one I'd go for. Just my opinion. I just can't see waiting for them to decide they're going to ship, when the same basses are available at Sweetwater. They don't make them differently.
