crust
I saw the Epiphone LP Special II Plus Tops at Guitar Center but cancelled my order. When I saw that the Emperor Swingster will be produced in "Royal White", I decided to keep on saving until that new model of Emperor Swingster becomes available in the USA. I was divided between getting the LP Special II now, or continuing to save for the Royal Emperor Regent Swingster when it becomes available. Decisions, decisions. Now, instead of the Special II, I'm thinking of obtaining an Epiphone LP standard plus top in blue. Good decision ?
brad1
I think you should get whatever one you want the most. But of course I lean toward the Plus Top; for obvious reasons.
Supersonic
The LP standard and the Swingster are both great guitars. I'm sure you'll like either one. If you play more of a rock-a-billy or country style, then I'd say go for the Swingster. Good luck on your decision crust. I don't think you'll be disappointed with either one. SG Ludwig: I normally don't like blue guitars, but I must admit you're LP looks VERY nice.

gta05
GOOD Decision, the Les Paul Standard his far better than the Special II and the blue his so nice man.

Miss you all...(with every shot) Willy Willy, Good for you that you have given up smoking. More guitars now I smoked for about 15 years (ages 15-30) and quit when the kids came along. I really don't miss them, one less bad habit. I don't consider putting money away for cool guitars a bad habit. Smoking yes, guitar GAS, no
DoubleWide Revival
I don't know guys. I am a blue guitar owner myself (not Epi's though, shhhh). It really is a tough decision, I heard about the new Royals here on the forums today, and now my internal "next guitar" discussion is changing. The Dot is really calling me. crust
GOOD Decision, the Les Paul Standard his far better than the Special II and the blue his so nice man. I did have a plain black LP Special II several years ago. It was a great guitar, but ya, it really is a "beginners/student" guitar, even with the "plus top". I think the money would be better spent on a "standard" Epiphone Les Paul. I'm still waiting for my luthier to repair the broken headstock on the Casino. I'm hoping by the end of this year to have 2-3 new Epiphones. A Casino (the one being repaired), a "standard" LP and a "Royal Swingster". Now that I don't smoke, I continue to put $$ away for guitars, and I surely do like Epiphone's.

All those new white (and goldtop) guitars that are being released this year do look great. Save, save, save. Particularly the "F-hole" type. They look, sound and play "so good". Pennyman
@ Crust - you mentioned a couple of very different guitars in your original post. A Special II is a good-enough entry-level guitar, and the Swingster is a full-sized, hollow-body beast. Some folks have recommended that you spend a little more money for a Standard over a Special, and I'd be inclined to agree with them. As far as hollow-bodies go - as mentioned, the Swingster is full-sized and thicker than a Dot, which was brought up above. The Dot's body is also bigger than a Les Paul, but thinner than the Swingster. I would be remiss if I didn't bring up this beauty - the body of the WildKat Royale fits in right between a Les Paul and a Dot (thin-body semi-hollow): As people have said, your final decision will rest a lot on (A) what kind of music you intend to play, and (B) which guitar fits and feels more comfortable in your hands. Good luck, and let us know what you decide on.

MarioC
I have a Ebony Dot and just picked up a Wine Red Swingster last Friday at Guitar Center in Saginaw, MI on Bay Rd. When I took the Wine Red Swingster down to the Luthier he was ecstatic. He loved the the guitar and was impressed with how well it was set up right out of the box. He lowered the action and adjusted the intonations then played it acoustically and was thrilled with it. Then he plugged it into a Fender Blackface amp put the post in hum bucker and played some Jazz. Wow, what a big sound and it was sweet. Then he tried the pickups in single coil and the Swingster was a great sound. The Swing Busters are great pick ups and will give you what you want. This is the most versatile guitar I have ever owned and I can't wait to get home to Texas and plug it into my Line6 Flextone III Plus to play. I also have a Polytone with a 12 inch speaker and it should be a great Jazz set up. I will be playing it mostly at church anOpryry gigs. This is a lot of guitar for the money and when the Luthier got done setting it up it plays so smooth. He didn't have to dress any frets they were perfect out of the box no sharp edgeswould recommendcomend that you find one to play before you make a decision on a Dot. I didn't andorderedoreded it on faith and I am not ondisappointedointed at all. As a matter of factecstaticstatic about the quality and sound of the Swingster that I would buy another one in a different color just to have one more in my collection.
