Discontinued Models

I see there are quite a few models that are marked discntinued on Gibsons site.

Les Paul Classic

Les Paul Classic Antique

Les Paul Standard

Les Paul Standard Premium Plus

Les Paul Studio Premium Plus

I understand the older Standards are discontinued for the new 2008 Standards. The others I wonder about. Is Gibson planning an update for the Studio and Classic like they did with the standard?

I haven't heard anything from Gibson about updating the Studio or Classic... my best guess is that they're going to release several new models (aka old models with plek'd frets and new names...) and see if they sell. And if they don't, then they'll probably revamp the old ones. I think one of my guys at the local music store said Gibson's new guitars are coming out Jan 09.... no guarantess though.

On the SG side, only the SG-3 is listed as "Discontinued"...

Good question. And what about the other models that aren't on their site.

SG Classic

Vintage Mahogany

Les Paul Special Double Cut

Les Paul BFG (non-limited)

Wonder why they don't advertise all their models on their site?

I don't know about all of those, but I think the SG Classic is exclusive only to GC & MF... Could be the case with the others...

cheers

What is this about too many models? Variety is not a bad thing. If anything I'd say they don't have enough variety within the Les Paul line.

I would love to see less models with more "options"

something like this....

Standard Options*

- Weight Relief or Chambered

- Humbuckers or P90s

- Plain Top or Plus Top

- Traditional or 2008 Controls/Hardware

- Standard or "Faded" finish

Color Options

Goldtop, Ebony, Heritage Cherry, Iced Tea

And just consider all of these models to be standards with different options.

Same goes for the Studio line but with a few less options

Studio Options*

- Weight Relief of Chambered Body

- Humbuckers or BFG configuration

- Traditional or 2008 Controls/Hardware

- Nickel of Gold Hardware

Color Options

Ebony, Classic White, Wine Red

*All Les Paul Standards and Studios have 2008 Asymmetrical neck profile and tenon.

If I can buy a car with a list of factory options to choose from why not a Gibson?

That would be my next standard: Faded finish, plain top (cherry burst) and P90s...

Damn, if Gibson USA made those I would buy a couple.

Options are great but i think they slow down production (build time) too much.

Plus I think they make it harder to find the guitar you're looking for.

Hard to make everyone happy....

It is strange that Gibson seems to be phasing out it's slim taper neck (not that I'd want one) but there

are more than a few fans of it.

Personally, I think we're better off w/ more models - less options.

Les Paul Classic Custom is also on the endangered species list. It was a Gibson USA model introduced in Jan 07 and it's not linked anymore (you can still google for the old page) on the product listings. Musiciansfriend says "discontinued." Interestingly, there are tons of special models that get phased out, in fact as of 07 they listed them on the site:

http://www.gibson.com/Products/GibsonElectric/Gibson%20Electric%20Guitars/Gibson%20USA%20SubPages/Discontinuted%20Models/

Not bashing, just curious. Kind of liked the specs on that Classic Custom but never got a chance to hear one.
