Peerless Songbird vs Peerless Casino

Recommended Posts

I sold my Peerless Casino a few months back, and upgraded to a new Peerless Songbird from Chandler Guitars. I have lots of pix and a review/comparison posted here:

Looks like a fine guitar! Although, on your link, I have no idea why you listed this as one of the advantages: "and the guitar’s finish doesn’t look like it’s been dipped in plastic. It’s shiny, but not obnoxious, and I don’t feel the need to sand it down." Why would that even matter if you had already dulled down the finish on your Casino?

Thanks for checking out the post Supersonic. I always thought the overly heavy poly finish on the Casinos made them look cheap. I guess the advantage to liking the finish on the SB is that it saves me from a lot of work sanding (sanding that poly finish on the Casino was a pain!).

BTW, what did you use to sand down the poly on your Casino? I am relicing(brutally destroying) a Squire Strat and I tried a little sand paper at first and it looked horrible. I switched to a ScotchBrite pad and it took that plastic looking finish right off there and left it looking like it had more of a "Satin finish". I never wanted to sand all of the paint off, just dull it down. Of course then I beat the hell out of it with various objects, but that's a different story...

I used a 3M sponge (using the blue textured side) and wet-sanded the poly down so that it was completely dull. Then I took some fine sandpaper and wet sanded it a bit more to smooth it all out. The guitar looked great after that. Scotchbrite should do the job nicely.

You know, you could paint the back of the pickguard any color you want, and it would look perfect on the top side. I have a '90 Gibson Tennessean with a clear pickguard that's painted silver on the back, as is the truss rod cover. Gives it a very nice look, imho.

Never thought about that... makes sense... just like how a mirror is painted on the back. Do you have any pix of that?

I actually prefer the guitar without the pickguard, and I still have this wicked 3-ply vintage tortoise shell guard that I had made for the old Epi.. I'm trying to find out what degree the headstock angle is on the Peerless. I'll keep you all posted.

Buddha - Sorry I don't know how to do pics + I'm old & lazy. If you google Gibson Tennessean, you'll see some photos of the model with a silver pickguard. Those are the ones that are clear & have been painted on the back. Later models switched to a black plastic pickguard (and also added the odd looking black armrest).
