short circuit Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 hey i just bought a new es-330 and had a few questions. ive been playing guitar for a long time and thought it was time to upgrade. the quality and sound is great. but there are a few things i wasn't expecting on a guitar this expensive. first there is a rattling coming from either the trapeze tailpiece or the bridge. dosen't come through the amp and dosen't bother me too much but i didn't think it was normal. is there somthing i can do to fix this or is this normal? the second thing was that it keeps coming out of tune. very fast, faster than any other guitar i have ever owned. the strings do that little pop noise when i bend them, so that makes me think the strings keep getting hung up in the nut. on my other guitars i would rub pencil lead in there but i didn't think i would have to do that with a guitar this nice. and didn't want to incase it was the tunners and i had to return it for another one. so do you think the nut is too rough or is it the tunners? so bottom line is are these things normal? if so how can i fix them? or do you think i could return it and get one in better shape? thank you for any help.
Deacon Blue Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Did you have the guitar professionally setup when you bought it? A proper setup can make the guitar tottaly different. I owned a 330 for many years and never heard a rattle, that doesn't sound right. Get it set up professionally and that should resolved the ping from the nut issue. Have them check the bridge at the same time for the rattle. 330's a great guitars, enjoy it man.

g6120 Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 Those type of bridges sometimes have that rattle and some dont its just the way some are and not to say it cant be a fixed it can be . Your tuning problem you mentioned is a common thing and a good tech can alleviate that as well . The strings could be hanging on the nut or the bridge but there is a fix for it . I had a Gibson ES 330 L two years ago had the same issues sold it which I should have kept so a few months ago went and bought another but this one was perfect set up right out of the box and this one is here to stay . You could very well lubricate the nut and the bridge and it could very well solve that issue and save you cash .
Notes_Norton Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 I have a 1970 ES-330 and a 2001 Epiphone Casino. I had the ping/tune problem on the 330 (the older of the two) and cured it with pencil lead. Now I use pencil lead on all my guitars whenever I change the strings. BTW, let's see some pictures of your new beauty. I'll start, here are mine... Notes
dylanita Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Hello short circuit! I have another 330 reissue from the Memphis custom shop (mine is a 2009) and I had EXACTLY THE SAME TROUBLES THAN YOU! Sound OK, construction OK, but the set up (¿?) was HORRIBLE! no intonation, the guitar didn´t stay in tune with the bendings.. rattling from the pickup selector and the tailpiece of the bridge with the vibration of the guitar .. So I had to carry my guitar to a good local luthier here in Spain and now I´ve got a new guitar.. The string guides in the nut were to thin.. And he had to make them thicker. He had to do a complete profesional set up. I think that a guitar with a price like that shouldn´t need any aditional set up from a luthier to be playable.. But sometimes Gibson keep doing things wrong. It´s a shame. This is mine:
Versatile Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Welcome to the delightful world of the ES 330 I was lucky and have had totally positive experience with mine Perfect set-up out of the box from Gibson It's a great guitar and complements the ES 335 very well..... V

dougg330 Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 Don't want to sound like a shill for Gibson, but I think they ship the guitars with the assumption that the buyer will have his or her new guitar set up to their own taste: string gauge, action height, etc. Every one of us has a different idea of the perfect setup, and the factory can't do one that pleases us all - so they don't try. Like "Notes", I'm a big fan of the ES-330. Hope you love yours, too.
Notes_Norton Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 I do that with every guitar I get. I recently got a Parker Dragonfly, it was set up great from the factory --- for someone else. The neck was straight, the intonation was on, but the action was higher than I like it. No problem, the Allen Keys to make the appropriate adjustments were included. Notes ♫
