Acousticologist
I've been keeping my eyes on the Bay watching many many guitars, and what's very noticeable is the amount of guitars left unsold. . Then it's relisted cheaper. And it still doesn't sell. There are some real goodies out there, at very good prices. Been meaning to sell my Martin D28 and Martin 00016GT. Looks like I better hold off for a little while. Sorry kids - no school shoes for you this year...

My advice is sell it into Australia check out the local prices here and you will pass out at what we pay considering our dollar is worth more than yours
onewilyfool
Acousticologist.....Based on Craigslist stuff around here the Martin "classics" are selling pretty well...the D-18's, D-28's, HD 28's, however the 16 series are on the list a long time. Also "Custom" Martin models start very high, but are on a LONG time and sell for less than the "classic" models that are similar....It seems Martin guys in our area like traditional (ie classic models, no cut-aways, even pickups never get their value back it seems)Most guys try to list their D-28's for example @ $2K, but they rarely sell at that price.....the one's that sell usually $1300 to $1600 depending on condition...the 16 series guys try to list at $1200+ but I don't think they sell that high....hope this helps. Frosty
I have noticed the price changes as well and assumed it was the result of two factors - in the US, at least. The demand of the baby booomers drove the price up on guitars, houses, everything and now that large population is leaving its wage-earning years. And many folks are still out of work - so another old guitar is less important than groceries and rent!
devellis
A bad market for selling guitars is often a good market for trading guitars. That won't work if you need cash but if you just want to move onto a different instrument, trades can work really well. Of course, it's also a great time to buy used; but cash is pretty tight these days, which is why selling is so hard.
dbsens03
I've managed to make a killing off of the times. You can find great gear for great prices if you've got the money. And I've made a fair amount of profit off of turning around and re listing the items I bought for a great price. Not every time though. I have lost some too. But trading or trade + cash will get you much closer to what your instruments are worth. It's crazy though. I see Les Paul standards/classics/traditionals for about the same price as Les Paul Customs. The guys with the Custom's won't trade down, but if you can sell your standards or classics or whatever and then snag a custom then you just got a sweet deal! EuroAussie
I would definitely try to sell in Australia first. Everything is over priced in Australia, especially acoustics. The economy is going fine and Aussies are used to paying a premium, try on ebay oz first. Its one of the reasons why im happy to live in Prague and not have to deal with the prices back home in Oz. retrosurfer1959
The prices in Australia have been crazy for years - I went to Australia almost 12 years ago I took two guitars with me and for the first time ever neither guitar came home with me they were just wort to much there. I probably had a dozen offers to buy my guitars before I finally said sure why not.
jonnyq5
Yep...The market seems to really be bad..I've been trying to sell my songwriter deluxe for quite some time now.No luck..!! Planning now to save my money and see if I can trade for a nice J-45 Rosewood.

I agree....trades are a great way to go if you can trade across or trade up.......Of course, if you have too many guitars, and are trying to thin the herd, even trades are a problem. Hint....best to have Martins and Gibsons...there is always a market for them.....custom luthier built guitars are REALLY hard to move in this Market.....small audience for them

hsech
I've had a tough time selling guitars on EBay this year. I recently sold a Gretsch 6122 1962 Country Gent and a Rickenbacker JG 370/12 AT A LOSS! I had a bad GAS attack for a SJ 200 and my wife made me get rid of other stuff to get it. This is the worse I have seen in a long time.
