Link
Hey all, I bought a brand new Gibson LP Classic Antique and I have noticed one or two problems with it... 1. The action is atrocious. Even my old Epiphone was better to play. it's been lowered as much as possible and it gets as much fret buzz as the Epi. 2. The plastic nut is annoying as hell. It will not stay in tune and the nut is too low. Anyone give advice?
Flight959
Hi, The trouble with a guitars setup is personal taste. What might be a great set up and feel to me may not feel good to you. Most guitars have slight fret buzz and even more so if the action is on the deck. Try bringing up the action a little to see if that sorts the problem. One thing I have noticed with my Gibsons is how different they sound and how different they feel throughout the year on warm or cold days. In the summer months by Custom has more buzz than in the winter..... Some members here live in really hot climate's. As for the nut, how do you know its too low? When you say too low do you meant cut to deeply? Another problem causing the buzz could be a fret which is not 100% level with the others..... Have the guitar setup by a different store from where you bought the guitar.. Or do it yourself.. Regards Flight959
Link
Yeah the nut is just too low. Like the strings are almost just sitting on top of it but they're almost level with the 1st fret. I had this problem with the epiphone and had a new nut installed, that solved the problem, but I'm worried with this as it's worth around 4 times as much. And the store I bought it from said to wait about 2 months before adjusting anything to play it in and so on. But really, at this stage, I actually prefer my epiphone because it's just so much nicer to play.
Flight959
Hi, I would take it back if your not happy. Over two months is a long time to wait to get something but if it's not right then you need to get it sorted so you can start to enjoy it. ...... In the meantime you can bash away on your Epi.. daveinspain
Get a good set up.... Sometimes I think Gibson leaves the final set up to be done at the store where you buy the guitar... That way the store can make an extra buck on the guitar or offer you a free set up as an incentive to buy the guitar.
DoubleSixx
I'm guessing you need a truss rod adjustment, and an overall setup. Not just bridge and tailpiece lowering but setting up the intonation in addition to all the adjustments. Good luck.
modoc_333
you probably just need a setup. personal preference. here is how to properly see if the nut is too low: hold down a string at the 3rd fret.... so the string is touching the 2nd fret. at this point, if the string is also touching the 1st fret, then that string is too low. repeat for each string. now, it should be REALLY close to touching, but just barely missing it.
