nixforsix
I'd like to see how sales fluctuate over the years. Has the decline of the guitar in popular music lead to a decline in sales?
jnastynebr
Its no secret that sales have decreased across the board. I have not seen any data sets that give numbers, but I know Fender hired a bunch of grad students to conduct some marketing studies last year. I would email Fender and see if they can give you some specifics.
Franzi
Usually shipping totals and production numbers are kept as confidential information. With some limited editions we do make the numbers publically known, those are the exceptions.
charlie brown
Quantity?? Too Many, in too many different forms...USA, CS, VOS, and the now defunct "Faded" series. ;>b They might have different monikers, but they're basically the same. It's like Fender...how many different "Strats" (or Telecasters), can they make?! LOL Of course, as long as we..the consumer, are dumb enough to buy into all that...who can blame them? It's marketing=profit! CB
rocketman
The only shipping totals I've really seen are in Tom Wheeler's book American Guitars. Goes up to 1978.
Riverside
Its no secret that sales have decreased across the board. I kinda doubt that, overall. According to their own website, they're pushing out 2,500 (of something) per week from Nashville. Me? I'm more concerned about quality - but that's for another thread. I agree with R9 - the number is closer to a zillion.

This link from 2009 says sales are down 20% http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/News/gibson-guitar-layoffs-320/ I doubt they laid off 50 people in 09 because sales are booming. ne14t?
By todays standards they probably make a TON of guitars on an annual basis especially now as a very well established international company. Back in the day it wasnt such large numbers from 1958 to 1960 only 1700 were made, really brings home the realization that a 59 Les Paul really is THE holy grail. jnastynebr
As collectible as the sunburst Les Pauls may be, by Henry's own admission, 80% would never have left the factory do to flaws in construction. The original PAF's were +/- 20% output. Value wise, you would be an idiot not to choose an original sunburst over a newer model, but from simply a player perspective, I would rather have a new one. 2500 a week is a lot of guitars, but this also encompasses SGs, Explorers, Vs, ESs, Melody Makers, and everything else. I would be very surprised if Gibson made more than 50,000 Les Pauls in a year. Most of these are lower end faded/special/Jr models, so probably only 20,000 Les Paul Standards. This is of course, 100% speculation. For all I know, it could be twice as much or half of that.
