Explorer and dropped tuning

120bpm

Recommended Posts

Drop to B is a mighty change IMO

Lowest I've been is drop C on a 12 string which is often used

One other 'Explorer' option is the 7 string which would generally have the low B 7th

I play a different 7 string strung thus with 10-56 and it works well....

My explorer is almost always tuned down two steps C -F -B♭-E♭-G -C most of the time I religiously use Ernie Ball Skinny Top Heavy Bottom strings (10-52) and I have had zero issues with this setup.

No problem, I was having issues with the gibson strings I think there were a light string, but oddly the high E string kept breaking when I was down tuning the guitar not even bringing it back up to E standard, jumped over to the Ernie ball strings and I have had the same $5 set on there for a month its changed tunes probably 100 times and nothing yet.

Why not, just out of curiosity? I wasn't exactly aware that this was your guitar that was being discussed.

Theres a huge diffrence between wanting to drop tune a 6 string then buying a 7 string for drop tuning.

Since the 7 string option came up, the only ones worth playing are the Japanese made Ibanez, IMO. No one else seems to be able to get the neck right. ESP/LTD, Schecter, Washburn, Jackson, Fender/Squire, Dean all failed in my book. Even the Chinese, Indonesian and Korean Ibanez not so good. Korean close but not up to par with Japan. I have yet to try the Gibson Explorer 7 string.

The 7 string guitar is a wonderful instrument

And has found favour with many jazz guitarists, beginning with George van Eps

Most are handmade archtops with single neck H/B

And the tuning is unique

6 strings as normal plus a low A 7th, often a light gauge bass guitar string

Facilitating the walking bass lines the solo jazz player often features in his/her performances.....

Jesper (formerly? I really don't know..) of In Flames uses Gibson Explorers, and they frequently go down to Drop A# and thereabouts.

I've tried C on my Bigsby-equipped Epi Explorer too with no great failures. [thumbup]
