Chrome p90's

So I'm thinking about buying a Casino or a Wildkat (probably a Royale) but there's something I've been thinking a lot about, so I thought, why not ask the pro's.

So, if I buy one of these guitars and I feel that the p90's don't sound as good as i would wish, would it be possible to put a gibby 90 in the chrome casing/gold casing of the epi 90?

Hope this wasn't a stupid question, I've been wondering for a while.

Dewy,

No stupid questions...However!.... I am a pro at stupid answers.

My Avaitar...LP Special... I put Gibson Soap Bar P-90s in it.

What I found....(and don't depend on this!!!!)

When I got the Gibby p90s they fit into the plastic covers of the Epi P90s. The holes aligned perfectly.

The Epis would not fit the Gibby covers....The core pickup was wider. (not longer)

Point is that the pole screws were the same. The Epi pickups (without covers) were slightly wider.

Not much help I'm sure...but...All I can offer.

Except!!!!.... I have never heard of anyone complaining about the stock p90s on a Casino....except in terms of height.....(a matter of shimming)

Not exactly sure why the conundrum. If you were replacing the pups, wouldn't you do it cover and all?

Thanks Willy

Well, I was thinking that maybe black dogears would ruin the classic Casino look, but I was really more interested in seeing if it was possible. Haven't bought the guitar yet so at the moment I wouldn't know if I like or dislike the original pup's.

I guess I'm curious if there is a possibillity…

I would say that going with black pickups might be determined by the color of the Casino. Here's a picture of the same guitar with 3 different trim options. IMHO, the black looks better ( and different ) than the usual chrome/white Casino thing. But may or may not work as well with other finish colors. To each, his own.

It's possible, only 2 immediate sources:

ALLPARTS (for Dog-Ear)

http://www.allparts.com/P-90-Pickup-Covers-Chrome-p/PC-0739-001.htm

GREASYGROOVE (for both styles)

http://www.greasygroove.com/p90pickupcovers.php

[confused][confused][confused]

Thanks, I'll check into that if the Epi's were not to fit :)

That does look good! I'm aiming at buying a sunburst one and I'm not sure if that would work…

You know, I think that the black looks good with the Natural and Red guitars, maybe not so much with Sunburst. I went with custom P90s (Biltoft) but if I were to do it over, or get a second Casino, I'd think hard about leaving the stock ones in. They get some great sounds when set at the proper elevation. I went with the Biltofts because they are set up to change the magnets out, from ceramics down to AlNico 2's. Lots of fun to experiment with.

I tried to put Gibson P-90's into an MIK Casino and use the Epi covers a while ago and it was no go. Pole spacing, pickup size didn't match.

I put in a pair of GFS Vintage P-90's instead and was happy... but not 100%. They were actually a little too hot in this guitar. So I put the stock Epi's back in and added a platform under the bridge PU (like Gibson used to do in the 50's) to get it up closer to the strings. Jackpot!!! The bridge PU really snarls and barks now, and the neck pickup is airy and warm and woody. The GFS P-90's are now happily living in a '62 Gibson ES-120 that was converted to to an ES-125td.

My point (and I do have one, somewhere) is to try adjusting your pole piece height and maybe try the platform under the bridge PU and see what that does for you before you replace the pickups. The stock Epi P-90's can prove to be better than you thought.

+1 on the black P-90 covers!

Well, I take back the comment on Sunburst with black PUs not looking good. Thanks for the visual, Doug.

Thanks for the input Doug! That sounds like a good idea, an advice that everyone here might be interested in, instead of being manic about pickupswapping (like myself). Seriously, good advice and if dissapointed I'll definately give it a try [thumbup]

As I mentioned earlier, if I had a chance to do it over, I would probably keep the stock PUs, raise them up (careful where you buy the rings to do it, some don't emulate the P90 PU shape at all) and spend any available money on upgrading the electronics. There have been a couple of threads in the past about the riser rings, a search will get you some good info. Good luck and have fun with it.
