pete c
i would just ask the guy what he wants for it, and if its in your price range buy it.
grampa
You don't have to worry about "cheating" a pawn shop. They know what they have and what it's worth. You could even haggle down the price without cheating him. If it's real, go for it. I just scored a Harmony Archtone from one of my local pawnsoops for 130 bucks. An great deal and I'm sure the pawnshop made a profit. These days very few guitars of any quality show up at pawnshops, there are better ways for a seller to sell his guitar - eBay, Craigs List etc.
milod
Grampa... good deal if the neck is good. Gonna electrify it? I did pretty successfully back in the olden days. In fact, around 67 or so I added a tuner and doubled the G string with a string an octave up as on a 12 string as well as using an external magnetic pickup that required no drilling. Fun sound, that... http://www.archtop.com/ac_access.html m

Fun sound, that... http://www.archtop.com/ac_access.html m The neck is great. It is in fantastic shape for a '64 vintage. The nut needs some work to undo a previous "adjustment." I thought of electrifying it but I think I'll keep it original. It is way fun to play. It sounds like you "Roger McGuinned" yours and made it like his signature 7 string. Cool. milod
Actually that's from way, way before McGuinn did his as far as I can tell. John Koerner of Koerner, Ray and Glover did it that way. They had a cupla albums out as "blues, rags and hollers." He still plays, btw. Big Joe Williams did something similar as a 9-string, too. I emailed McGuinn, btw, about his 7-string and asked if he'd known of Koerner, which I'll wager he does and did, but no response. It wasn't uncommon in the 50s and 60s for blues types to do that kind of messing with a guitar. Not common, but not uncommon either. RE: Electrifying. I didn't wanna mod my guitar - which went away years ago - with body holes, the extra peg was enough, so I did one that required no drilling or anything. I'd do it again, too. m

Fun sound, that... http://www.archtop.com/ac_access.html m This archtop got me thinking. It is dated 1964 so these were around when I started playing and I wonder what my playing would be like now if I had gotten an archtop instead of the flattop. The flattop was the "folkie" guitar and I was into folk so I thought, chauvinistically, flattops. If I had gotten an archtop I may have gone more rock and blues because that's what makes me play now. And I may have never discovered Fahey or Kottke.
Jeff-7
I saw the tag on the case (he keeps track of when it was pawned, the amount, and the person's info on masking tape on the cases), the guy pawned it for 50 bucks and never returned to collect it. Going to talk to him tomorrow, I'm a little scared of it because the chipboard case those came in back then was disintegrating pretty badly as though it got wet. I noticed yesterday the ceiling tiles back in the storage room had water damage.
milod
Jeff... Take a good look... But even minor damage and a good price could make repairs worthwhile... it all depends. What the heck, look at Willie Nelson's classical box. Grampa... I know exactly what you mean about the folkie era and flattops. Anybody who even thought archtop around where I was in the early '60s was essentially told they were nuts, and the "real" guitar was a flattop. Then they proceeded to play Carter Family stuff that Mother Maybelle did with her big Gibson archtop. Ah, youth and foolishness. Kottke, absolutely. Not only the pickin'. The guy's sense of humor is marvelously warped, and ditto his songwriting. m
Jeff-7
Went back today to buy it and looked in the sound hole, turns out it's an LG1. Sorry for the poor quality, they were taken with my cousin's Blackberry. Apparently it's the vampire version, it hates sunlight.

Jeff-7
It needs a little work, first thing is to clean it up really well and put new strings on. The bridge is starting to pull up a little and I'm thinking some of the bracings need to be looked at. Here in the next week or so I'll probably take it up to Kansas City to have a luthier check it out. Not bad for 100 bucks. I told him what it was probably worth before hand but he insisted on that price. Think I made out really well.
ne14t?
Buy it for what he is asking, if its worth more the pawn shop owner should have done some research.

milod
Jeff.... Enjoy... The guitar... The obvious friendship that is of greater value than any guitar. I'd say it's "luck," but... I doubt it. m
Jeff-7
Thanks M! I kept trying to get him to take more but he wouldn't have it. One of the greats out there. Fingerboard is scrubbed clean down to the bare wood and the frets were polished with some 00 steel wool, it's got some minor divoting but I'm not too worried about it at the moment. Scrubbed some fret doctor on her and she's looking pretty sharp now.

Jeff-7
Will do Dave, I have a feeling a luthier will have to do a little work on it but it will be worth it.

I've yet to see a telephone take decent photographs. But these will do until a camera can be located. Oh, and nice score Jeff.
