Help with a SG Identification

Hi folks,

I'm new to the board. I currently have a Faded SG (Black w/white pickguard - 3 humbuckers), and have been looking to upgrade to a nicer model of SG. Specifically, I'm considering the SG Standard, and I love the '61 RI, although I'm primarily interested in one with a black finish, which I know isn't currently offered on new models. After playing a '61 RI at Guitar Center, I think I would definitely prefer an SG with the slim taper neck profile. I found this guitar on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/2004-Gibson-SG-Standard-67-Reissue-guitar-/370486759544?_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D5%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8780531605561132140

At first I thought it was a misprint, and he meant that it was a '61 Reissue, but obviously you can tell by the pickguard that it's not. I did a google search for a '67 reissue, and if this was a '67 RI, it should have P-90s, and again the pickguard is wrong. I emailed the guy, and he said the guitar has a '60's neck.

Does anyone know what this is? Is it a Standard with a 60's neck profile, or some other kind of reissue? Or is the seller totally mistaken?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

If you are in email contact with the guy ask him for two things

1) The serial number stamped into the headstock that can easily date it

2) If its stamped "MADE IN USA" on the headstock, this was done on all instruments after 1970, in some very rare instances it was stamped into some early guitars, I think before the SG was even made, but it helps to weed out any serial numbers that have been used more then once.

Scroll down this site has the exact picture being used on eBay maybe this is them?

"Alternate options such as the US Post Office for shipping can be discussed with the high bidder at the end of this auction. USPS deliveries are still subject to packing time fees, material fees & the time wasted to take items to the Post Office ! We don't stand in line on our dime if you know what I mean, but we will do this for our customers if needed"

That comment right there in there eBay listing made me not even want to deal with them, if I am giving you $1350 for a guitar and then paying the cost to have it shipped you can stand your *** in line for free buddy...

Thanks for the input! I agree with you about the snarky comment about shipping procedures. If I'm paying $1350 for the guitar, I think it ought to ship for free. If you spend $200 on an Epiphone at Guitar Center, they at least give you some free picks and a pack of strings.

I asked for the S/N. I have a hunch that what he has is a 2004 SG Standard, and that it's not a reissue of anything. If it was a Reissue, I think it should probably have a batwing pickguard.

I'm now leaning towards getting a used '61 RI (black with gold hardware - it was a GOTW), and swapping all the hardware out with nickel. There are a few available for $1300 or so. Even with the money to swap the hardware out, it will still be quite a bit cheaper than a brand new '61 Reissue.

Looks like an 04 standard to me judging by the S/N as well. If you enlarge the photo on the ad of the back of the headstock you can just make out 01554454. Looks correct as they went from 8 to 9 digit S/N's in 2005.
