Rev
Hello folks, I'm looking at buying a new guitar in the near future. I have to hit my weight loss goal to do so, and in the meantime my NGS is flaring up now and again :) I had always thought that my next guitar would be an SG, I owned an Epiphone a while back, but sold it when I needed some extra money. Recently I started looking at Flying V's, and now I am unsure as to which I will spend my hard-saved and sweat-earned money on. The reviews that I have read on Flying V's are glowing in comparison to the SG reviews, though this isnt to say SG reviews are bad. Either way, acquiring the perfect guitar will be a task because I play left-handed. Thanks in advance, Rev

ALso, the neck profile and body balance are what you'll want to check. Personally, if it were same neck, pickups, wood, everything but body shape (and peghead shape) the same, I would go with the SG. Having written all that, what kind of music are you intending to play with it, and do you intend to perform onstage?
Versatile
This question is easy to answer.... Get Both !! They are such different designs as to make a choice really difficult The Flying V is evidently for visual impact...Hendrix appeal etc The SG is light and easy handling with great tones and a long list of famous players I have never owned a 'V' but love the wild look and bold design As for the Explorer and Firebird...... ne14t?
My favorites are rock and metal, but I do drift over to alternative lighter rock from time to time, which is what I use my Les Paul for Well the Explorer and the V are hands down the best metal machines out there, but some dont like the fact that it only has 22 frets. Both the V and the SG are a really good guitar, the SG would be easier to find, but I think the V is way cooler. It all comes down to personal preference and which one comes available at a better deal for you though, the easiest solution is to get both as already mentioned. Rev
I dont necessarily have the funds to get both at the same time, but whatever I buy certainly wont signal the end of my guitar buying for life. (But I had actually thought that my purchase next would be a Fender Tele :/ ) At this point Im leaning V, just for the shock value and from everything I've read the difference between the 2 for what I want to do would be almost negligible. Rev
So after doing some more digging last night, I've narrowed down a few things - Im between a 60's reissue SG and a Faded/Standard Flying V. Likely a Standard. I would want to swap the terrible newer pickguard out for a smaller one, and maybe even replace the pickups. I dig the P90 single coils on the 60s, theyre exactly what I want. My only beef is that Gibson does not offer the 60s reissue in Lefty and Alpine White. What gives? They do the other 3 colors for leftys but not the one I've decided on, which is why the V is still in play, because I have decided I want White. A white guitar would compliment my Wine Red and Gold Les Paul studio.
slipshoddon
I would stay with the SG, just more comfortable to play in the long run.
rmnc
Get the V. SGs are too common and boring imo.
antwhi2001
The Vs are surprisingly light for their size, although the SG is lighter. I think the new Vs come with ceramic pickups as standard, which are great for heavy rock but not so good for blues /classic rock. An SG with P90s would give you something more versatile, P90s will do anything....
ESPguy
Go with the V, and its cheaper too! I used to hate Vs until I got one. Now I want more!! I'm notorious for swapping pickups, but I like these pickups-496r & 500t pups. They are great for rock and blues.
Twiz
I voted SG because it's my favorite electric guitar ever, and it will definitely be easier to find one in a south-paw version. That being said, I just got a V last week and I love the damn thing. It's super comfortable to play. I guess you could get that and flip it like Jimi did if you can't find a left-handed version. Crap, I'm no help. Try both, I guess. Cheers.
