Joe M
After trying many different brands of strings on my J-45, I think I've found THE ones to use....John Pearse PB Lights. I've always used D'Addario's on just about every guitar, acoustic or electric, that I have. On the J-45, they were just too bright and thin sounding, even though I thought they are great on my HD-28V. The Pearse are darker and really bring out the bass and tame the shrill-sounding treble. I guess, for me anyway, I like a brighter string on my rosewood guitars and a more subtle string on mahogany. Oh, the Pearse sound great on my walnut backed and sides Martin OM-16WE also. Give them a try if you haven't yet....
EuroAussie
I like the JP pb's but the problem i have with them each time is that they have an amazing sweet spot, but it goes very, very quickly and then its disappointing. I found DR Sunbeams to work best on my SJ and CW mahogany guitars, and definitely 13's, they really take the Gibby to another level. btw: agree brighter strings are best for rosewood and have been using Daddarion EXP's on the SWD, but might also give Elxirs a go. E-minor7
Have a 45 and a set of JPs here. But first I'm gonna enjoy the guitar with the Martin ph.b 12s a few weeks. Put them on last Wednesday instead of the fine sounding Gibson Masterbuilts 12. Have to say they bring up more power in the guitar - especially on the bass-side. But the next move is clear. J-45 + JPs alright -

I know you are a warm and tireless speaker for those DR Sunbeams and I did follow your advice EuroA.. Strung up 12s on my SJ 63 a fortnight ago and admit they treat the old beauty fine. In fact they tend to fill out the hint of hollowness I sometimes hear from the B and light E. Within a week I'll try 11s on the 1 5/8 66 SJ. EuroAussie
I'm glad my DR sponsorship is bearing fruit ;-) Have you tried them as 13's ? They are more flexible than normal mids and as weird as it sounds I find playing with them more comfortable than 12's as the strings just seem to really stay in 'place' well. I thought they would be needed only for the CW to counter the heavier bracing (thanks for the note) but the 13's just really bring the SJ alive, I cant speak highly enough of this gage on those two guitars. Clayfingers
I use John Pearse 80/20s - new mediums on my smeck and nick lucas, and lights on my Aj. They sound old-timey to me. I get 6 weeks out of a set, which I think is OK. I've tried sunbeams, martin sp, d'addario pb & 80/20, but keep coming back to the 80/20s for that hollow thunk. Frosty
The Pearse strings are excellent! My choice is the the Phosphor Bronze and Silk set - warm with none of that new string metallic jangle.
