albatross5791 Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 I just purchased a brand new Gibson, my first!!! I also bought the Gibson Vintage Reissue Restoration Kit to have for upkeep. This is the first nitrocellulose finished guitar I have ever owned and am not to familiar with how to care for this finish. Should I use the guitar polish regularly to wipe off oils from skin. Or should I use it sparingly over longer periods like once a month? Any other suggestions on how to take care of this beautiful guitar? Thanks!!!
Michael Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 I've got the same problem, I hope someone can enlighten us!
TWilson Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 This topic was discussed a short time ago and the sage advice was that the new nitro finishes need some time to set up, harden up, for lack of a better term. I find a soft cotten cloth or micro fiber cloth slightly moistened will do the trick. On my '04 J-45, I use a little Gibson Pump Polish every 3 or 4 months and just wipe it down in between. I think some of our British brothers use camel spit. I'm not sure what that means because they talk funny.
onewilyfool Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 you guys ARE using this cream on your guitars, right????

TWilson Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 ROFLMAO wilyone! I would wager most are but as for TW? Who knows? Remember he has gnomes in his garden! Johnt-I knew you were swimming around out there and if I threw out the right bait you'd hit the hook! Also' date=' gnomes belong to my friends Harry and Cathy as well as the garden. It's easier to borrow a garden you know, what with all the watering and weeding that goes on over there. [/color']
zombywoof Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 This ain't your grandfather's nitro - got all kinds of catalysts in it these days. No more weeks or months of air drying and wet sanding before they end up on a dealer's wall. Best thing you can do is just wipe 'em down after you finished playing. As I said in a previous post, that finish may take up to a year to cure and during that time it will lose about 1/2 of its thickness.

Will try to address my shortcomings in attendance in coming weeks Hope you're good? BR John
Space Pup Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 I also use Gibson's Vintage Reissue Restoration kit on all my guitars, acoustic and electric. I wipe down my guiatrs with a damp micorfiber cloth after each use as was mentioned earlier. I use the finish and metal polish about every two to three months and the fretboard conditioner about every six months.
onewilyfool Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 " Should I use the guitar polish regularly to wipe off oils from skin." "Or should I use it sparingly over longer periods like once a month?" "I've got the same problem" "I use a little Gibson Pump Polish every 3 or 4 months and just wipe it down in between." "I think some of our British brothers use camel spit." "Best thing you can do is just wipe 'em down after you finished playing." Just to be absolutely clear. we ARE talking about a cream for guitars, right????
Michael Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 I tried a damp mico fiber cloth and still the crud remains!
jannusguy Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 virtuoso brand cleaner and polish. works great!
Space Pup Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Michael, if the cruds been on there a whil it may require a little elbow grease to get off. You may also want to try the Virtuoso cleamer and polish that Jannusguy mentined. Although I have not tried it myself, I have heard lots of positive things about it.
Johnt Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 +1 Rob and Space Pup ( or should that be +2?) It was worth the 3 week wait for Elderly to ship it over. My J45 looks quite tidy after de- crudding you can now see every ding!
nolongermike@gibson Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 It rubs the polish on its skin...... ?!?!?!
