mvargon Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 I have an old SG standard. It's probably a 1966 or so. The serial number is 590768. I can't find any referneces to serial numbers that begin with 590. Does anybody know anything about SG serial numbers starting with 590?
nolongermike@gibson Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 As embarrassing as this is, http://everythingsg.com/ has all you need to know about SGs that we don't have here (YET!). Before I can back to Gibson I used that site to sort out the year of mine, which falls in the 68 - 70 range.
ksdaddy Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Most serial numbers are not exclusive to any particular model. There are exceptions but I'm speaking typical of the 60s and 70s. With Gibsons, sometimes it's easier to date the guitar if the serial number is scraped off, because people get wrong information from the internet (this site included) and there have been cases of people being misled by that information and then they are disappointed or insulted when someone points out the truth.... that their "1965" guitar is actually a 1975. Gibsons aren't hard to determine the date within a certain range based on physical attributes and electrical compnents if applicable. If you want us to help you date your Gibson, post pictures of it here. We can help you.
GuitarJunkie Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Welcome aboard. Now that that's out of the way, you've posted this in the wrong section. Try posting it in the SG section of the forum and you're likely to get a reply much faster.
mvargon Posted September 22, 2008 Author Posted September 22, 2008 Thanks for the info. I know it's a 66 or so because I'm the original owner. As you may know, anybody who claims to have lived through the 60s and can remember it is probably not telling the truth. I know I got it between 64 and 68. I wasn't sure if I could get more information about it if I could connect the serial number to the Gibson site. In any event, thanks again.
dickey Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Well, I had a '68 or '69 SG Standard and the serial # started with 510. I also had a '68 special and the serial # was 944042. Hope this helps.
mvargon Posted October 2, 2008 Author Posted October 2, 2008 Kind of makes you wonder what the purpose of the serila numbers were?
