Sparty206
Hey folks, I recently bought a '61 Reissue off of Ebay - it's one of the 400 from GOTW #6 (2007, black w/gold hardware). I love the ebony finish, but I don't care for the gold hardware, so I already went ahead and bought a replacement bridge, stopbar, pickup covers, grover tuners, and schaller strap locks - all in nickel. Once I get the guitar, I'm going to take it in for a professional setup and nut replacement, and I'm going to have all this hardware swapped out simultaneously. I realized last night that I forgot about the toggle switch. I definitely want to replace the gold hardware there, although if I can't get nickel and have to have chrome, I'm okay with it. Can anyone tell me if I need the replacement part to be straight, or right-angled? I would assume right-angled, but I thought I would double-check here before I order the part. Thanks in advance! ALFA ROMEO CORSE
Why?? Your ebony SG '61 RI with gold hardware is (or was...) amazing, a real beauty and a rare SG. Strange idea to swap gold to nickel

Strange idea to swap gold to nickel I just prefer the way the nickel looks; it's a little less flashy. And even after paying for the new hardware and getting the bone replaced, it'll still be a few hundred cheaper than a new '61 Re-issue, that they don't even make in the ebony finish. stein
I agree that the gold hardware on the guitar is really cool and sets itself apart from others. You just don't see anything like an SG standard with gold too often. But, I applaud you for wanting a guitar a certain way and taking steps to make it happen. I don't think any guitar is so valueable that it shouldn't be done. Yea, yours will be worth less than it was, but does that matter? YOU having what you want and what makes you feel it is worth more than the guitar. And, the switch is a right angle in an origional SG, but I have seen short ones at times. Shouldn't be a worry because the luthier should have one or easily have access to one. Maybe even nickel. (if I knew where to get one I would have said). While you're at it, don't forget maybe a rewire. I think the briaded wire and caps make a big difference for the better. You could also have it wired different ways to suit your preference (50's or 60's, etc.)

Sparty206
We are talking about this SG? Nice, nice !! That's the one! I'm hoping it arrives today. I've bought all nickel replacement hardware for it. I understand those who like the gold, but I personally think nickel looks the best. Especially because I plan on having this guitar forever, and nickel looks the coolest when it starts to age.

Sparty206
Gibson make Ebony SG '61 RI They do make them. I saw one like that for sale on Ebay. I think they're only available in Canada at the moment. Plus, they have Chrome hardware, which is okay, but again, I really like nickel. And buying this GOTW used and swapping out the hardware with what I really want is still going to cost less than a new '61 Reissue.

stein
That would be great for a wedding gig or such, but I wouldn't show up in a blues bar with that! I would. And, it would be a perfect match for black and white wingtips, which I would also wear to a blues bar. I'd have chicken grease all over that thing, and I'd feel fine with that in the truck of the Cadillac.
