SG Standard Fretboard....

Hello Everyone,

I scored a great deal on a 2008 SG Standard last week. However, when I got it home I noticed that the fretboard on the Standard is much lighter in color than my Classic? The wood doesn't appear to be dry or anything of that nature. Is this something common on black Gibsons? Do they tend to put lighter pieces of rosewood on them? I've posted a photo below.

Thanks

Maybe your Classic somehow ended up with an Ebony board eventhough it's supposed to be Rosewood...

Your Standard looks normal - maybe a touch light but not much (nice SG btw! O:) )

Here's my '98 Standard for comparison - slightly darker, but it's also 10yrs older (finger oil over time I would imagine darkens rosewood)

Thanks man. Great lookin' '98. That makes me curious about the Classic:-k. Nice choice in amp btw. I play though a HRD as well.

My Epiphone G-400 has a much darker fretboard than my Gibson does, even though they're both rosewood.

The fretboard on that classic looks an awful lot like ebony to me, though...

Rosewood varies in colour...as seen in these pics.

As for the Special, you should email the serial number to Gibson and ask if it's ebony.

Great looking guitars you have there!

Its really easy to tell ebony from rosewood just by looking at the grain and texture. I doubt that's ebony. More than likely just differences in the rosewood and your standard is probably a littler drier than you realize. I bet if you oil it you'll see they're much closer.
