twon Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Hello Everyone, I scored a great deal on a 2008 SG Standard last week. However, when I got it home I noticed that the fretboard on the Standard is much lighter in color than my Classic? The wood doesn't appear to be dry or anything of that nature. Is this something common on black Gibsons? Do they tend to put lighter pieces of rosewood on them? I've posted a photo below. Thanks
MI_Canuck Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Maybe your Classic somehow ended up with an Ebony board eventhough it's supposed to be Rosewood... Your Standard looks normal - maybe a touch light but not much (nice SG btw! ) Here's my '98 Standard for comparison - slightly darker, but it's also 10yrs older (finger oil over time I would imagine darkens rosewood) cheers
twon Posted September 23, 2008 Author Posted September 23, 2008 Thanks man. Great lookin' '98. That makes me curious about the Classic:-k. Nice choice in amp btw. I play though a HRD as well.
WhiteRaven Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 My Epiphone G-400 has a much darker fretboard than my Gibson does, even though they're both rosewood. The fretboard on that classic looks an awful lot like ebony to me, though...
Tim Plains Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Rosewood varies in colour...as seen in these pics. As for the Special, you should email the serial number to Gibson and ask if it's ebony. Great looking guitars you have there!
twon Posted September 23, 2008 Author Posted September 23, 2008 Thanks Tim. I'm gonna email gibson for sure and see if maybe for some reason they but an ebony board on my classic. I'll post there response.
Randy1 Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Your Standard looks like mine. Your classic sure looks like ebony.
Ronnie Robinson Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Lemon Oil can greatly darken the wood . Ive al;so just got a Standard 2008 SG which seemed light in colour ( and dry ) lemon oil soon darkened the fret board
barton fink Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 yeah dude mine is like that to. my sg fret bored is lighter and the les paul fret bored is darker check it out http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b234/adamprutsok/S7303748.jpg

Everdying Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 the fretboard on my SG classic also looks dark, tho not as dark or as smooth as ebony, ie. still shows the typical rosewood grains.
TattooedCarrot Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Its really easy to tell ebony from rosewood just by looking at the grain and texture. I doubt that's ebony. More than likely just differences in the rosewood and your standard is probably a littler drier than you realize. I bet if you oil it you'll see they're much closer.
