Tim Plains Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Gibson USA guitars and Custom Shop guitars...including the historics. This isn't about which guitar is better...it's about what YOU like more. Base it on looks only. As much as I love my Custom, I gotta go with the Standards. Customs obviously have a touch of class. The block inlays, 1st fret inlay, ebony board, Custom logo & triple binding. But there's something about a Standard that just screams rock 'n roll.
RichCI Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Love my Custom even if I'm not too big on gold hardware. It's just a badass looking guitar.
deepblue Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 I love them both, but I agree with Tim. Standards are pure rock. Its just something about them. My Custom has higher gain pups, so if im in the mood to get really crazy, I up the gain and go for my black beauty.
Flight959 Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 RichCI... Love you custom. Looks so much better with uncovered pup's... NiCe.... Flight959
Wolff Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 The Standard is the most beautiful guitar ever IMO. THE icon of rock. Wouldn't mind having a Silverburst Custom though - that's on the top of my wish list. Naked pups! Oh ya, that's the way to go. V
surfpup Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Funny, when I only had a Custom - I really wanted a Standard. Now that I have two Standards (and the CUstom is gone), I really want another Custom! But if I had to have just one, I'd want a Standard - so that's my vote.
crossroadsnyc Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Probably getting into linguistics here, but are you counting the Custom Shop Reissue "Standards" such as my R8? If so, I like my R8 "Standard" more than my USA Standard and I like my USA Standard more than my old "Custom". My vote goes to the Standard. The Custom is a nice guitar - just not for me.
CajunBlues Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Wow... I can't believe anyone would prefer a standard over a custom... My custom sounds much better than any standard/classic/deluxe I have ever tried or owned.... But maybe I just have an unusual custom/guitar....
HeadCase Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Standards all the way. Now I'm thinking "Historic" not.... "Gecko"...
Wolff Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Tim stated this was to be based on looks only. In general: Standard = maple cap, crown inlays, regular headstock, plain pickguard. Custom = all mahogany, block inlays, larger headstock with binding, bound pickguard.
saturn Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 I've always had a thing for Customs. Whether it's a Black Beauty, Alpine White or those red/black type bursts (no idea what the name is).
UnGauGeD Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Custom all the way..... Since you said based on looks! Ebony fretboard and custom inlays are pretty much the bomb. And nothing is sexier than a black beauty!
wheelman Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Custom's for the most part, but I love standards too.
ALIEN8 Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Hate to be a buzz kill, but I have a custom classic Oh, you mean custom shop... There are a few things not custom shop about my axe, but many are... the head stock inlay is a holly, and the pick-ups '57, and the inlays are trapezoid, but the binding is 175469 ply (I exaggerated a little), ebony board and quite heavy... So In my case, standards for sure!
RichCI Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Wow... I can't believe anyone would prefer a standard over a custom... My custom sounds much better than any standard/classic/deluxe I have ever tried or owned.... But maybe I just have an unusual custom/guitar.... I think it just varies from guitar to guitar regardless of model. Sometimes you get a good slab of wood and sometimes you don't. When I bought my Custom, I didn't want a black guitar let alone one with gold hardware. But, the Custom I have happened to be the finest LP available - and I tried a LOT of LPs while working at the music store where I bought it; this one's a real cherry.
daveinspain Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 I had to go with the custom... I don't have a standard and have never played one but all that aside I love the look and feel of my black custom...
T50 Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Based on my limited LP collection and even more limited experience as a player, my vote goes to LP Custom.
ask28 Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 apples and oranges.. two different species. Can't really compare them.
Tim Plains Posted September 25, 2008 Author Posted September 25, 2008 apples and oranges.. two different species. Can't really compare them. Sure you can...looks only, not the rest.
fingers galore Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Man that is a tough choice to make. I really love the ebony fretboard of the custom. But if I have to judge on looks alone I choose the ...... I don´t know. The standard I guess but not by much.
