BigKahune
. Can you zero in and explain why you want to change and what you're looking for in a guitar? You've got a Les Paul Studio and you're thinking about a Les Paul Standard - does you studio have a maple top or is it all mahogany? There's not a lot of difference between a maple top Studio and a Standard except the cosmetics and possibly the pups. You're also thinking about an SG - quite a difference between a Les Paul and an SG. You should be visiting shops and playing as many LPs and SGs as you can so you can get a handle on what YOU like and which guitar is better for you. Yaff
If you are only considering the SG because of cost, then I would recommend the couple of months hard work! In the long run, it will be the cheapest option, as you will end up selling the SG some time at a loss and buying the Standard. However, if you like the tone and feel of the SG, then go for it. Both the SG & Les Paul are fantastic guitars. So in summary, its better to wait and get the guitar you desire, than compromise now, as you will never be happy. Andy by the way, always try as many as you can before you buy, as all Gibson`s are not equal. All the best
rotem
yea i have maple top its a wine red, but i just unhappy with the studio not because of the sound its just i feel like the standard is my dream guitar!
StijnV
With the SG you will have however less problems with your back because of it's light weighted body in comparison with the LP Studio or LP Standard, when you would be playing live at gigs. Kind regards, Stijn
BigKahune
..... i feel like the standard is my dream guitar! That certainly a reason to make a move. Go for it.
rotem
That certainly a reason to make a move. Go for it. thanks i know! but i will need an half of year to be able to buy one (second hand) is it worth the waiting and second hand? thanks you very much anyway! regards,
BoyVader
Go with the Les Paul...I have both an SG Std and a LP Trad...I play alot of Led Zep songs....always sound better on the LP for some reason... If you really want the Led Zep tone, get a Telecaster!!! Seriously...most of Mr. Pages most famous lead lines he did on a Tele... Good luck with the search... Guest BentonC
I've found that holding out for what you really want is always the way to go. You'll generally be much happier in the long run. Go for the Standard!

Dallastx
I guess that's why lots of guitarists own several. Each one has a different tone or plays differently. D
SlashPerryBurst
yea i have maple top its a wine red, but i just unhappy with the studio not because of the sound its just i feel like the standard is my dream guitar! You've just answered your own question. A guitar of this quality can be for life. A few months hard work will more than pay you back when you have your dream guitar. Rather than looking at a "second choice" thinking "it's nice, but I prefer the les paul". With the SG you will have however less problems with your back because of it's light weighted body in comparison with the LP Studio or LP Standard, when you would be playing live at gigs. Kind regards, Stijn I've never had any problems with the weight of les paul's (chambered, weight relieved or none of the above) and I have a history of back problems. thanks i know! but i will need an half of year to be able to buy one (second hand) is it worth the waiting and second hand? thanks you very much anyway! regards, It's definately worth it, but if your gonna go down the second hand route, you should probably play as many new les pauls as you can to give you an idea of what to expect and what to look for. That way, when you have the money, you can look into some secondhand les pauls and you'll have an idea of what you're looking for. It might be the first one you play or you might spend a few months looking for one you like.

Go for the Standard! +1 except that I'd say go with the Trad..they're a bit cheaper than Standards, but sound a bit better to me (no offense Benton) It's all about what sounds best to your ears and feels best in your hands B)

sellen
traditional is not chambered but it's weight relifed. Standard got tone pros locking tuners and locking brigde and stop-bar, traditional got regular Gibson tuners , brigde ans stop-bar. Standard got Burstbucker pros pickup, traditional got 57 classic. Standard got the new data stuff in the control room, traditional got the good ol' stuff.

Angellus
thanks guys! i really dont know what to do change to sg wait a year for a standard, buy an highway one tele, please help me! Wait for the standard in my oppinion, you wont regret it. SG's are great but I find that it doesn't compare to a les paul when you want to rip a solo. as for F****R....dude if your heart is set on a standard get the standard nothing like it go try out the Traditionals

SlashPerryBurst
thanks guys!! even if it will take me a year? Yes. Some people are more fortunate that they can afford many guitars. You'll be much happier in the long run. If looked after, a Gibson will live longer than you and will provide you with a lifetime of joy... Remember, there is no substitute for perfection. ;)

SlashPerryBurst
thanks man! i will save my money and will take a heritage sherry sunburst! thanks! No worries. It will be worth it. I have a 2004 heritage cherry standard and I love it. If you're going to get one built after 2008, go for a traditional... Since then, a standard just hasn't been a standard... The traditional is effectively a standard though.
