JuanCarlosVejar
The pickguards were designed by Don Everly in the early '60s. They don't seem to effect the sound. In fact, it sounds great. The new depth and belly bridge really enhance the sound. that what someone said at the bottom of the gibson page as a comment
BigKahune
. The originals were custom made in 62/63 for the Everly Brothers - 1 inch less wide than a J-200 (16") and thinner than a J-185, with the big pickguards. Discontinued in 72. In 1986 Gibson reissued the Everly Brothers guitar, renaming it the j-180. Since then the J-180 has been reissued a couple more times. I'm not a fan of the double pickguards. Here's one from the 60s with the original string through adj bridge.

Craig910
I own a '91 Gibson Montana reissue of the ebony J-180 "Everly" model - the double pickguards look cool, and they don't affect the sound negatively at all. The maple back and sides provide a sweet tone, and the neck is perfect for me.
