Nothing plays like a Gibson

I took some more pics today without the p/g. Im in love fellas!

It plays like no other guitar I have ever played. Beautiful sweet sustain, and as the sustain starts to

diminish you get a harmonic kind of feedback that I find hard to describe. Its like the guitar has a mind of its own and it wants to keep going. It makes you want to play more and more. Truely a remarkable guitar. The only beef I had was that the pots crackled a bit. Maybe just a squirt of WD-40 or something along those lines will silent the crackle once and for all. Its not bad, but its still there.

Honestly guys...If you have the means to check out a reissue, be it an R9, 8, 7...or you choose, by all means do it!

Yes, they are pricey. A bit overpriced if I may be honest, but they do not sound or feel the same as Gibson USA

guitars. And I love my USA's, they are amazing, but reissues take it up to a whole new level. I was telling Tim in

an e-mail that I may just sell my Standard and get another reissue.

The guys that already have them know what im talking about...but for you fellas that are saving to get either your first Gibson, or are waiting to get yet another...save up if you have to and get one of these....I promise you you will not be disappointed!

Hey Deep... What an amazing top!!! If it plays half as good as it looks it would be great but as you describe the way it plays no wonder you're in love... Only problem is you are giving me GAS... :-s

DB,

That is one amazing guitar there. Also, do not use WD-40 as it does collect dirt (found this out the hard way when using it on cars). Get some DeoxIT spray. You can find the small cans of it at RadioShack.

Hi Deepblue

Great looking guitar, indeed!

I noticed that you also have a black Custom. How would you

compare it to your RI?

T50...

Thanks for the nod.

The 59 is a little more mellow sounding then the Custom, and much warmer. The Custom has more powerful pups then the R9 sporting 490R/498T's while the RI has the BB 1 & 2.

Another thing that amazes me about the R9 is the sustain. I never took much stock in the "short and long tenon" theory. But im a believer now. That along with the 59 rounded neck makes for a much sweeter sustain then just plain high gain and hold the note sustain. very melodic.

The Custom is like a caged animal waiting to be released. Very aggressive and in your face. Not that it cant be cleaned up mind you, but its really nice with some high gain settings on your amp.

More please!

WOW!! Those pictures are so nice' date=' they deserve to be posted again.

Oh man...this guy's in some serious trouble! What have we done???

Just bought a R9 two days ago...TWO days ago...and he's planning on a second historic.

Is the Custom eventually going, too? A '57 Custom, maybe? :) (That's a joke, don't answer it.)

I can't say that I blame you. I got my R9 in May, R8 in July, and R6 in September.

When you're hooked, your hooked, right?

The best part is, I got the approval from the little woman for another R9.

It won't be for a while, probably this time next year. I want a 2009 R9 just for the sake of having a 2009.

I don't consider myself a collector, but it looks like I just came to terms with reality...

Time for me to ask what many of you might think are stupid questions. Hell... I just recently figured out what R8 and 9 mean and had to ask someone at my local guitar shop what VOS means.. So, that should tell you where I'm coming from.. My ignorance doesn't mean that I'm not interested in what your talking about with these "R's" though. I recently bought a 2005 LP standard premium plus and absolutely love it and love the sound... I've alway's wanted a Les Paul and finally could afford one. Only took about 35 years to get to that point! I've never owned an all mahogany guitar so this is like a new frontier with the sound and the sustain. In a couple of years maybe I can afford one of these reissues.

My questions are: Where are these made that makes them so different from the production models? Are they made at the same Gibson factory? Are they made by certain craftsmen that aren't part of the mass production process? Is the wood different from production models? Pickup's different? Any other info that put's them into their own category that can command such a huge price difference from the base price?

Yes.. I'm a little green but hopefully not for long.

Thanks in advance

hbpatter83, in a a nutshell...

A reissue has long neck tenon and does not have any weight reduction. Whereas, your LP does not have long tenon and it has 9 holes drilled out of the body in order to keep the weight down.

Reissues are copies...non-exact copies...of the original Les Pauls. Meaning they are constructed along the same lines. Yes, the pickups are different...but then again the pickups are different between your LP and a LP Custom, right?

Honestly, just go play a few of them. You'll see that they are consistently better than Gibson USA Les Pauls.

the Custom Shop guitars are made by different guys as well. not to say USA LPs are crap, but CS guitars get a little more hands on attention.

the reissues also get the better wood. most reissues weigh about 8.5-9.5 lbs and they are solid bodies. many USA LPs weigh more than that and have weight relief holes drilled into them (excluding the chambered ones, which is a whole other discussion).

reissues also have different pots and caps, as well as pickups. lots of guys change some or all of these things immediately, but i still find a stock Historic to be amazing.

you are paying both for premium parts and labor, but also for the name. the way i see it, for what a new Standard costs, you can get a 1957 or 1958 VOS Reissue for not much more if you know where to look. and there is nothing wrong with buying used. I bought my R9 used for thousands less than what a new one costs. and of course, DO NOT EVER PAY THE STICKER PRICE. if a dealer won't haggle, RUN away.

Tim, FennRx,

Thanks for the fantastic info! Love that Xray! I was about to ask if mine is weight releived then why is it so @#!%$^ heavy.. but FennRx covered that a little. I didn't know about the long tenon... very interesting and makes sense for difference in sound and sustain.

Of course it's all relative. Since this is my first Les Paul and I've never owned an all mahogany guitar then of course mine is the best in the world.. right? To me that is... until I try one of the reissues.

Mine is used so I have no problem with that. In fact I thought the used one was much better than the new ones I tried.. that may be because the setup had been done by the PO. I also thought my finish was much nicer than the newer ones. Mine fades nicely all the way to the edges. The new ones (not premium pluses though) had a distinctive black ring around the edge of the guitar that I didn't much care for. My used one has no flaw's or nick's and all the nickel is bright and shiney with no wear marks.. looks brand new. So yes.. I'm happy with used.

I'll keep my eye's open for a deal.

BTW.. can any of you recommend a good guitar strap for my less paul.. one that's comfortable and spread the load a little more than a standard strap. Do any people use a wide bass guitar strap?

Thanks again
