WALL MOUNT OR STAND

I currently own wall mounts for my Fender Strat and Gibson SG <---no longer own. The kind I own are these:

I like the way these hangers work and the security they give the guitars.

I can mount them in any way I prefer and they can not come down by accident (a very solid mount). I have my guitars mounted on the wall so the headstock's face each other at left and right angles and it looks like I have artwork hanging instead of the plain old way of hanging the guitars straight down.

Hell you can mount them on the ceiling and they wont come down, there that solid.

My question is would you rather have your guitar on a stand or hanging on the wall?

Right now I am waiting for the new mount to be shipped so I can mount my Les Paul on the wall.

Depends on how far you want it to fall if it drops.

If it were to drop, I would rather it drop from a stand that's already on the floor, than up on wall.

There is no way it can fall off the wall unless you didnt secure it to the guitars strap buttons or you didnt use anchors to mount the unit on the wall...

Or you don't have a stud finder and put a wall hanger in...Luckily when mine broke, it did'nt come all the way out of the wall, so my guitar didn't fall...God I was lucky... #-o

Famous last words.

Setting into the holders, taking it down out of the holders - - - - right, nobody ever lost their grip or thought something was secure when it wasn't.

Never heard of a strap button pulling out either I guess. Yep, sometimes those screws come right out.

Not to mention somebody clumsily bumping it hard and knocking it down.

Guitars get banged, dropped and broken all the time.

A lot of guys would say the HS case is the safest place. Of course sometimes a case is opened only to find a broken guitar. You never know.

You asked the question - stand or wall. Sorry you didn't like my answer - stand.

I dont have a problem with your answer, I was just asking what most people do. I dont want to see my Les Paul fall off the wall (not saying it would) and I dont know of a good stand that wont mess up the finish. My Traditional is my pride and joy and I'd hate to see anything happen to it.

I use both. In my practice room where my amp is, there's no hyper puppies running around to to knock them over or scratch them so I have a stand there. In the livingroom, I have a wall hanger which normally holds a cheap old acoustic I use as a decoration. Occasionally I'll put my nicer guitars there if I'm playing them downstairs or if I just want a nicer instrument on display; but the good guitars don't stay on the hanger for very long. Maybe a day or 2, then either in the stand in my practice room or back in their case.

I don't know if I'd rely on this type of hanger so much as it means the guitar is at the mercy of the strap buttons when I'm not close enough to catch it before it hits the floor. I do however like that they are trying to hang the guitar without hanging it by the headstock. I find that the headstock method is the safest way of not dropping it, but it messes up you guitar's setup if it hangs by the headstock too long.

The next time I look for a wall hanger I might see if I can find something that cradles the body of the guitar.

I posted a similar topic on the SG forum.

After reading some of the responses on that one and on your post, I have decided not to hang mine on the walls.

I only use a floor stand when I am having a jam or doing a gig.

At home if I feel like jamming, my Gtars come out from the case to play, once I have finished jamming after a clean they go back into the case.

For some people this is a pain in the arse to do for every jam at home but I am feeling more assured that my investments will not fall from anywhere whilst they are asleep in their bed "case" hee hee.. [thumbup]

For me these days it's quality stands. I don't own a home at the moment, might go back to a mix of wall hangers and stands when I do next. I like the accessibility and relative safety of a wall hanger (easy to grab at any time, can't get knocked over by a kid/dog/cat etc.). Of course everything is a trade off, there are potential consequences and potential damage in any method (safest is in a case set lengthwise on the floor, but even that there is potential danger- what if there is a flood?). My favorite stands for one or two are the "on stage" type that cradle the body and rest the back. No neck contact whatsoever. If I leave several out for display/accessibility, I have a Proline rack for 5.

Ten years ago, when I set up my guitar room, I mounted (7) String Swing wall hangers on a piece of oak moulding so they would be secure, (since you can never find a stud where you need one). I'd had a few close calls with my Les Pauls twisting out of the holder & coming close to falling. About a year ago, my Les Paul Studio did fall out out the String Swing wall hanger. I was lucky, I was able to catch the guitar, only breaking the pickup selector switch tip. I noticed the newer models had a (2) large rubber washers to keep the guitar from twisting like mine did. I contacted Sting Swing customer service, told them what happened & asked I'f I could buy seven sets of the rubber keepers. They apologized & sent me (8) sets of rubber keeper, free of charge. They told me that the metal based model was intended to be mounted on an amp, but like I did, many people used them as a wall mount. They now include the rubber keepers with new units. Anybody out there with these wall mounts, I stongly incourage you to contact Sting Swing & have them send you out these rubber keepers. Les Pauls seem unusually prone to twisting & falling off.......... [cursing] [cursing] [cursing]

I use both.

I prefer hanging on the wall because I have a couple large dogs with powerful tails. I've got them mounted on a nice piece of oak anchored in the wall studs.

When jamming I usually have the one I'm playing at the time on a floor stand.

Since this picture was taken, I've added another section of oak that the Guild hangs on when not in the case.

I like using hangers...if you can't find a stud then just use drywall anchors. I quit using stands because the surgical tubing marred the finish on my guitars.

I would be careful with stands like this, or wrap the rubber tubing with some cotton gauze or something, I have heard of lower quality tubing and stuff literally eating away at Nitro finishes on guitars.

My guitars all stand in their cases in a wooden stand at home. I have a couple of pipe stands that I use in my office and have just ordered a couple of hercules stands to try out.

You will like the Hercules stand, its extremely awesome. I use one for my explorer since its got the weird shaped body, and well it was slightly pricey but well worth it. They claim it will not harm the nitro finish on guitars, and the self locking head is a dream, its always locked and can not unlock until you lift the guitar up and out. If anyone wanted to use wall mounts I would say look towards these guys, they got two options for wall mounts that utilize the same locking head, well worth it.

It depends... I find wall mounts to be better 'cause they will take less room and they will be out of reach for most children and quadrupeds. Stands are better because you can place them anywhere you need them while wall hangers stay in the same place.

I use the least safe of them all, the hercules micro stand... it doesn't offer neck support or safety of any kind... but it is really small where you can just put it on the back of the amp when going somewhere.

I have hercules safety wall hangers all over the place and most get use, some are used for guitars I have to fix, some are used for guitars I use only 2 times a week... none of them have given me any trouble YET.

I think it all comes down to preference and what acceptable risks your prepaired to take multiplied by your own home environment i.e dogs kids etc.

My preference is to keep all mine in their cases and out of the way. I would love to have my Traditional and SG on display but I'm an overprotective father! plus my instrument insurance states that they gotta be in cases so that sealed the deal for me.
