A Little Love for the LG-1

These can be really sweet sounding guitars, despite the dreaded ladder bracing. This one may not be as full sounding as my LG-2, but it really has a quality all its own. I find it more suitable for certain songs than my LG-2 and B-25. (I don't presume that my opinion is very important--I just felt like posting a picture. :-s/

"I just felt like posting a picture" --lol! Hey, to hear one in action, check Ari Eisinger on 'Tube playing Black Horse Blues. Great guitar, great picker and some great Blind Lemon. J

the upper bout is about the same size as the lower. is that what distinguishes it soundwise from a blues king or L-00?
Absolutely. The upper bout literally rounds out the tone-- the x-braced LGs (LG2, LG3) dont get the crisp attack that the L00 does; the ladder braced Lg's attack is sharper but drier--wont have the resonance of an L00 (long scale blues kings are different as well, more piercing than a s/s L00).

ps here's the Ari link

I gave my '64 LG1 to my youngest son 5 or 6 mos. ago. I bought it new and would recognize that distinctive sound anywhere. I'm obviously biased, but when I think of classic, vintage Gibson's - this sound is right up there with the other's more supported by 'conventional wisdom'.

The SWD--I would have brought it this year if not for the last minute cancellation.

I played a a 57' LG-1 at a small shop in LV last year. Terrific sounding guitar, really loved it, and if it weren't for the very tight (to me) string spacing at the nut, would ave bought it. Loved the tone, hated the neck.

I just purchased a '65, with a replaced rosewood bridge, and boy am I digging it! It is in need of a refret, which I may actually consider doing, given what I paid. I was quite suprised with the tone of this little ladder-braced thing - which I guess I shouldn't have been, since I've owned an old '20's Oscar Schmidt parlor for a number of years. The OS is much more cheaply built (although, it can't be all bad - lasting 80+ years!), all-birch, and ladder-braced as well. But like the LG1, it too has a very distinctive/old-timey sound.

Anyway, I'm glad I stumbled on it!

My '57 has pretty decent spacing (e.g., night and day A/B'd with my B-25). A lot of inconsistency with the necks and nuts on the LG series. I have a banner LG-2 with a baseball bat, but I played a banner at Chicago Music exchange with a neck nore like my '57 LG-1.

A good friend has an early B-25 (first or second year, I think), ad the string spacing is just too uncomfortable for me. THE LG--1 I tried in LV was very similar. If it had just a bit more room at the nut and saddle, and a slightly fuller profile..... Oh well. I have a 1946 LG-2 with a pretty full neck that I love, so all's good. I like that ladder braced LG-1 sound though. Great blues guitar.
