Either its come down already or the link is bad. WHen reporting these things (which we are really grateful for!), please include the item number by itself and the general link to the eBay site (as in, ebay.com, or ebay.com.uk) so we can all find it quickly. Your reporting helps us get these auctions removed quickly, but we'd also appreciate it if you'll email service@gibson.com.

It's still there.. just looked at it.

It used to be you could spot the fake by three screws securing the truss rod cover. The real ones use two screw's.

I can't make out the serial no. (deliberately hidden?) but if someone can you can call the Gibson 24 hour customer service line and they can look it up.. they would also be very interested in checking it out and they would be happy to call ebay. I've talked to them before regarding this subject.

What are the other way's to tell these day's? What would the normal price be?

Is it just me...that one doesn't look all bad. One of the better fakes I've seen.

The only thing I see wrong with it is the screws holding the plastic piece covering the pots.

Did Gibson USA ever have a GT with P-90s? 'Cause it doesn't say '56 reissue anywhere.

The thing is, some of these fakes look great in photos, but we have several of them here, and without giving away the things they are still doing wrong that help us catch them, I will tell you that up close and personal with them, these things are just junk. A photo just doesn't tell the whole story. These are not the same wood, heck, we even saw one made out of pine at one point. Yes, pine. As in that sappy tree that drops maddeningly sticky stuff on your car's paint job and ruins it....

The biggest thing is that some poor kid who saves up his money is usually the one who gets hurt the most by these.... thinking he got the real deal only to find out he was suckered by somebody who sold him a bad fake that looked good in the photos......

The only thing that comes to mind for me is the serial number and the USA stamp on the back of the headstock.

Does anyone see anything else?

Here are my observations.

The gold flake in the finish looks too coarse (some sort of smudge too' date=' but can't tell if that's the finish or gunk) and too yellow:

The grain on the back of the headstock doesn't look like mahogany, more like maple and it's one piece instead of having the "wings" glued on the sides:

The body looks like maple or something other than mahogany and the cover for the electronics on the back is tilted with the top and bottom edge not lined up with the neck:

Overall, if the pictures are telling the story, it's a pretty crappy copy.

Mike...

I hear ya, they are getting good at fakes but im sure if any one of us here picked one up to play we could tell in a flash that is a fake.

looking again I notice the "Les Paul" font to be a little thick.

Id never buy a guitar from e-bay.

Yeah, they are clever the fake makers, but they are not so good at certain details. The bottom line is that once somebody gets one of these in their hands, or every just sees one in person, they can instantly tell what crap they are. Plug them in and its even worse. At some point I hope to get the chance to take some of these fakes, cut them up with a saw and show people just how crappy these things really are..... and do it on video to show people.

Another thing I don't think some folks take into account when they buy these, knowing they are fake, is that who knows what unsafe chemicals, or lead in the paint might be used in making these thing. They could be far worse for somebody than just hitting their wallet and pride, they could be toxic. I don't want my sweaty hands holding one for any length of time, that's for sure!

The pickguard cutout profile poorly matches the pickups (ie. doesn't hug the bridge pickup)... Also looks like there are no thumbwheels on the bridge posts... looks like maybe the posts are the Epi slotted screw version (hard to tell - pic is too small)

Maybe then Gibson will start buying them to stamp "made in USA in the back of the headstock and re-sell them to us...

Gibson employee #1: "at last! some QC consistency!"

Gibson employee #2: "yeah... that should take care of all those QC complaints"

Price Tag: Gibson Standard $5.000

hehehe just kidding guys... you know I love Gibson and find Gibson bashers lame...

Comparing the "Made in the U.S.A" stamp on the back of the headstock with my 2008 Standard's stamp, my 2008 Standard has no dots between the USA letters. You can even see this if you look at the 360 tab for the 2008 Standard and zoom in on the back of the headstock. Maybe that's another clue. Plus that finish looks a little sparkly!

Come on guys you are slipping, there is a ton of stuff wrong with this, he also describes it as a VOS!

Bad bits are logo, pick guard, paint, no fret edge binding, font of the serial, wood grain on the back.

What I caught right off the bat was the particle size in the metalflake finish - too coarse - and the serial number arrangement is wrong for an R6.

There's also something kind of funny about the cutaway profile vs. the pickguard shape.

Also, whoever made that comment about the back of the headstock not looking like mahogany is right, I think.

The case is wrong for a CS model.

Going back and looking at it, though, the seller doesn't claim it to be an R6, but he does use the phrase "to vintage original specifications" which I think is intended to be misleading.

To me, it was the gold finish.... kinda too glittery for a gold top especially since it's supposed to be a VOS. The serial number and MIA looked kinda off and the wood at the back is definitely suspicious looking.

Hope some poor guy doesn't buy that. A real shame that eBay has stuff like that. And it sucks for people like me who often have to get stuff from eBay as good Gibson's are hard to find in my country at a good price. A brand new Gibson Les Paul R8 would cost $5000-6000 Singapore dollars which after conversion is roughly US$4000 over here.
