So many kids, I appreciate that they're just learning, but do they have to play so loud? I try to play at the absolute minimum volume level, lest anyone hear and judge me. Oh, and all of the action on the guitars was to damned low. I did play a pretty *****in long distance runaround on a tele though. Now I want a tele. [unsure]

I was in the bass section at a GC. A customer knocked over a Fender Squier bass. It took a pretty heavy hit on the head. The guy almost walked away without even picking it up.

I hear ya. When I go into my local guitar store, there is always a kid playing real loud. Like comeon, at least know how to tune a guitar beforehand. I asked the salesman how does he stand it. He said, he tunes it out now lol.....

I play at low volume too, guitar for me is a very personal thing.

I would never tell them how bad they were. One of kids was trying to play seek and destroy, I almost went over to show him how to play it. But then I realized he had the proper fingerings and just needed to practice it. Then he attempted to play cowboys from hell, he did not have the speed to play it and his left and right hand were out of sync. I will give him credit, he played some slower metal riffs that sounded fine.

Kids jamming don't bother me. I figure they are hoping to get "discovered" and are showing their chops. Good luck with that.

I just play... loud enough for me to hear, and anyone else who stops by and might care to listen.

Unless I'm trying out an amp... :D

How could you try an amp out in order to buy it if'n you don't play it LOUD?! What's all this "I play it at 1" business?

If you're just going to PLAY at GC, then fine...play it at 1 (but why go play at GC when you can play at home with no kids blasting bad riffs?)...

Hmmm...

+1

I haven't gone into a Guitar Center or a SamAsh in about a month and a half. The only music shops I go to are more expensive ones to try out gear I want to buy later in life and they have practice rooms and no little kids

I just play at home, I know what my future guitar purchases will be and I know how they play and sound. So its just getting the funds together. I like to play loud, and I like my amp, so home suits me fine. I do only have about 4 or 5 sets of strings left though so I will have to go in soon... [crying]

Don't worry about it. Some dumb inconsiderate "kids" are well over 50, some considerate grownups are 12 and under.

What does bother me, though, are the parents who let little kids go running through music stores crashing, bashing, pulling on strings and such. Then folks sometimes blame the manufacturer for the floor model guitar or whatever. Sheesh.

Had I behaved like that at age 4... let's just say I would have learned a lesson.

I remember when I was around 10, my Mom would give me her university library card and I'd live in the place Saturdays while she was in class and check out books I wanted to read during the week. The first cupla times it was kinda funny because I hadda assure the staff I knew about books and that my Mom was a student. I do think they were a bit surprised when archaeology and paleontology were my favorites. <grin> They were followed by history stuff.

After a cupla weeks I'd just nod to the older ladies in the place ("older" meaning 19 or whatever) and head for the card file in those pre-computer days.

I can't believe a kid nowadays can't behave with similar courtesy.

Don't get me wrong... that's the same age I was one winter when I disappeared after school until around 11 p.m. down at the frozen river playing at James Fenimore Cooper stuff. I definitely slept on my side that night.

I know what you mean... When I go shopping in the US I mostly visit GC and places like it, mostly because there's more chance of finding what I want in there than having to go through lots of small places that are miles and miles away from each other.

Played a tele eh? And now you want one. [biggrin] Happened to me too, I used to hate them, and then I played one for an hour or so... spoiled for life! [cursing]

The activity at GC or other guitar stores does not bother me, I rather be there when the place is busy so the salesmen leave me alone. When i was trying out amps I would play loud enough for me, don't know how well others could hear me and didn't care.

I have seen some kids that are just starting but I have also seen kids playing really well and I mean really well.

I will never forget a kid I saw playing Crazy Train impeccably, the full song not just the riff. He might have been 12 years old at the most.

Frankly this forum can be "GC like" minus the noise with a lot of GAS threads.

Played a Tele too. Used to hate them too. Now I got one and love it.

American Special in sunburst - sounds absolutely great. Not too twangy and tinny at all.

Everyone should have a Tele in his arsenal.Quality top notch and price good.

I wanted to go check out the Memorial weekend sales since they apparently had some good deals but I didn't want to deal with all the kids.

Jeff, I saw that GC got in fivea bunch of H'Bird Koa's just recently. One was at the San Jose Store, (about 35 miles from me).

I wrote them and asked if I could use the 15% discount for more than $500 if I bought a $5350 guitar. They said, "Yes"

I told them I needed it to be $4500 + tax.

They said okay.... so the 15% was good for the entire price. I told them to put it away so no one played it.

When I bought my DIF, they gave me a 20% discount, but I didn't want to play hardball all the while my new guitar got played by people who don't care about it.

This morning I noticed that they just got one at the Concord store, (11 miles from me), but since I already put down $700 on the one in San Jose,

I'll go there after work on Friday and pick it up.

I wish more people felt the same way as you on this, I agree 100% on all topics! If I go in to play a guitar or check out a new pedal I usually do it pretty quietly, most of the time through a Fender Blues Jr III (the cleans are just amazing) I am very self conscious of my playing, I know I am not that great but I taught myself by playing songs I have listened to for years. Before I became a "regular" in the L&M store I goto, I would only grab the cheapest guitar and play it, the last time I used one of there guitars was when I bought my POD and I just said give me the cheapest guitar incase I break it and have to buy it today, the guy laughed and said "we dont worry about you just pick a guitar" but I have dropped about $5000 in the last two months at the one location so I think they like me (or see me as dollar signs!) but its a commission free environment so I never feel like I HAVE to buy something. As for the tele, this is funny I have always been a Gibson/Humbucker kind of guy, but maybe now that I am getting older I really enjoyed playing a Tele was nice and twangy ever since I have wanted to learn how to make one sing the blues.

The thing that bothers me about the whole GC situation is that I get painted with the same brush as the super loud wankers that never buy anything because I'm 18 and have long hair.

Last time I went in, I literally put on my Sunday best to try and avoid the kindof treatment I usually get from the employees and it didn't make a difference. I really don't want to go to GC anymore after my last visit.

They treat me like I'm trying to steal stuff or something until I whip out my wallet. Then they're annoyingly nice because they want commission. To be fair, this only happens at the GC closest to my house. But I'm not going to that GC anymore unless I "have" to. There's a nice little mom & pop shop right down the street where they're always super nice to me anyways. And they have better prices and better pedals and amps, just no Gibsons.

About the Tele.. Yeah Teles are the best. Get one if you can.

Oh yeah bro. Going in as a teen sucks. I think I posted this before, but I went in and I was looking for a fuzz pedal, I had 250 bucks cold hard cash in my wallet. I am always polite and if I am trying out something I am seriously considering buying, I ask if I can turn the amp up a little bit to try it out more, and if there is a room or something I can go to so I won't disturb people.

I went in, and tried out a Fuzz factory, the guy told me he understands that I wanna play around on stuff, but if someone wants to try out the pedal, I have to let them have it. I handed him the pedal back, showed him the cash and told him I was going elsewhere. Now, I have bought guitars, pedals, etc. from them before. Why treat me like ****?

Teles are cool... get a rose wood board though [drool]

People dont think kids can be musicians, I grew up in a REAL REAL REAL REAL REAL small town so small that Ambulance and Police services were about 45km away in one direction, anwho I digress. I picked up my first acoustic at age 12 and started playing, what a piece of poo that guitar was (1970s Terada acoustic, from what I have heard The Who used these guitars to smash at the end of there shows once the realized smashing there own instruments was costing a lot of money) there was no Guitar Centre or Long and McQuade just a small shop (wasnt even a ma and pa shop) and they thought there crap did not stink. Everything in the store was marked up heavily since they were the only shop in town, they never once let me touch a single guitar, I remember when I was 15 I went in on my b-day, I had $600 sitting in my pocket and I asked to try out an Epiphone Pierced SG with the intention of buying it but I wanted to atleast hold it and see if it was the one. The dude rudely barked at me from behind the counter that only paying customers were allowed to use there gear, and before I could even say I was interested in buying it he basically told me to piss off because he had customers to help, of course not in those words but even at 14 I got the message loud and clear. I was so pissed off that I walked out and bought a paintball gun, that was the last time in 5 years I touched my guitar. Jump ahead 11 years to today and well I still have the Terada but it doesnt get played anymore but I still look at it and remember that whole experience and it still bothers me, I probably would have been oooodles better if I hadnt been put off, but I had no desire to ever deal with that shop at all. At some point after moving away about 6 years ago now they decided to put in a Long and McQuade and to my enjoyment the aforementioned shop was forced out of business and were exposed for the ******s they were. People have to understand just because a person looks a certain way doesnt mean he has no money or no knowledge as a musician. Last time I went into L&M I saw a guy walk in that look like he had just crawled out of a dumpster, well he proceeded to drop a couple grand on a Marshall half stack.

And I guess I was being a little b!tchy in this thread, sorry guys, I shouldn't begrudge children who are trying to learn, and just want to have a good time without me bothering them.

Edit: Oh and Dub, having long hair sucks, people will hate you for that reason alone. I'm sure you do the same, but I just hold my head high and ignore them. Try telling them you're growing it for locks of love and they'll feel terrible. I've also noticed that women generally have mixed feelings about long hair, some love it, some hate it, and some are take it or leave it.

I see no reason why an unaccompanied 10-year-old or an accompanied 8-year-old should behave with less basic courtesy than a 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 or 80-year old.

The problem in many retail stores is that there no longer is the expectation of polite behavior for people ... can I say it? Under 50 or so?

I also think that, like it or not, in a retail store people pretty much do have to keep an eye on customers to size them up for sales - or shoplifting - purposes.

Sounds horrid. But the thing is, you really can tell a lot by initial appearance. The problem is letting the potential customer know where your head is gong whether they look like a certain sale or a shoplifter.

So... a bit of courtesy and a decent appearance doesn't hurt on either side of the counter.
