Flight959 Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Guy's I recently decided to break out my Les Paul Goddess. Whilst playing I noticed the E string kept getting caught between the edge of the fret where it meets the binding. A very small gap seems to have appeared on every fret from the 4th to the 14th only on the 1st E side. The first picture shows the string stuck and the second shows the gaps. Can I do anything to reslove this or would this be covered within the warranty?? Iam the orginal owner and the guitar is just over a year old. Flight959
AS90 Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 This problem is quite common on guitars without fret edge binding (a couple of my previous Epiphones did it). I have to say, the way the nibs meet the fret edges on yours looks quite poor, mine are completely flush on every one with no gap whatsoever. Its a cheap fix for a luthier but I would call Gibson and tell them you expect them to fix it.
Flight959 Posted September 25, 2008 Author Posted September 25, 2008 AS90, As a fellow UK Gibson owner are you aware that Gibson warranty via Gibson Europe is only 1 Year? Flight959

geyser Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 AS90' date=' As a fellow UK Gibson owner are you aware that Gibson warranty via Gibson Europe is only 1 Year? Flight959[/quote'] flight, that's the producer warranty, but if you bought it from a legitimate EU shop, you can avail yourself of the seller warranty that, according to EU rules, is 2 Years for everything; your counter-party on this will be the seller and not Gibson hope that helps...

Thanks. The guitar was purchased through an authorised Gibson dealer in London. (Soundcontrol) Is this a warranty issue though? Flight959
Flight959 Posted September 25, 2008 Author Posted September 25, 2008 Right, I have contacted Gibson customer services and they advised me to take the instrument to the original dealer to have the instrument repaired under warranty. Soundcontrol (The original dealer) have gone into administration. I called Gibson back who then advised me to contact Rosetti who WERE the UK distributer of Gibson guitars and who supplied my guitar to Soundcontrol. Rosetti have told me that they are happy to have the guitar back however they have stated that if they cant repair the guitar then they will send it back to gibson and Rosetti will CREDIT SOUNDCONTROL.......WTF they no longer exsist. Although this is a small problem with the guitar, the last guitar i sent back to Rosetti also had a small problem which resulted in them replacing the guitar.. In otherwords if they cant repair the guitar Rosetti will give a full refund to a company that is in administration. GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR](*,) ](*,) I must add Gibson Customer Support have been excellent! Flight959

Flight959 Posted September 25, 2008 Author Posted September 25, 2008 The guitar is going back to Rosetti for them to repair... Anyone know what the repair for his problem would require? Flight959
Flight959 Posted September 26, 2008 Author Posted September 26, 2008 Any idea what work would be involved in this repair??
bobv Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 I have a theory and a question. The theory is that if this problem was caused by the binding pulling away from the wood, it's not a difficult fix. If you take a look at the new pictures of the cross section of a new 2008 standard, they have an old unfinished neck next to it; on both you can see the neck binding actually is a T-shape like fretwire and goes into a groove and not just a shelf like the binding on the body. Anyway if the binding has simply pulled loose then the same binding can be glued back in place without much fuss. Stripping it off and replacing it and refinishing over it would be far more involved but that's probably not necessary. I don't have the experience to have seen this happen on a neck, only on old bodies where the celluloid binding shrank and curled away and needed to be replaced with fresh binding. Now here's the question: can you get a list of "authorized repair centers" as opposed to "authorized dealers"? In the US they're not always the same thing. A repair center would be authorized to do the work under warranty, and they'd understand how simple it is to fix it. If your distributor doesn't have a repair department, I understand how you'd be suspicious they want to send the thing back for a credit that you'll never see. I don't know if the warranty and repair arrangements are the same overseas but if you tell Gibson customer service about the retailer being insolvent they might just back you up. The EC rules about sale of goods and implied warranties probably don't help you if the retailer is locked down.
Flight959 Posted September 28, 2008 Author Posted September 28, 2008 Bobv, Thanks for your response. The situation with Gibson in the uk is this. A large company called Rosetti used to be Gibson's main distributer of their guitars here in the UK. Gibson in recent months has changed its strategy in as much as they now distribute their own guitars. Gibson is now in the process of enlisting authorised Gibson repair centre's however at this stage its still in its initial setting up process. Gibson Customer Service have been excellent in assisting with my problem at at no time has anyone suggested that the guitar will not be repaired under warranty. Either the wood has expanded in the neck or the fret's have moved. Unlikely as i dont live in an unusual climate......Its always **** here in London. Rosetti are still operating and although they no longer supply Gibson instruments, they have agreed to honor any repair work carried out on my guitar. I dont like sending anything in the post so I have to drive to the other side of London to drop the guitar off. If this repair is small then I would rather take the guitar for repair to a nearby tech saving me alot of time.. I cant describe the work required any better than the first photo.. Rosetti are due to accept my guitar next week. Flight959
