Aitch
Beware of this stuff. I bought a travel size to take on vacation last week at the beach. Between the deodorant and wearing only tank shirts all week, I've got a very cloudy and rough finish that looks like the usual sweat marks from playing outside ......but it won't wipe/wash off. It looks like it will buff out. Anyway, just thought I'd share that little tidbit of info with everyone.
grampa
I've heard that DEET, the insect repellant, does something similar.

ParlourMan
Does your guitar have BO? Is it glandular or is she just a sweaty mistress?
Gilliangirl
Beware ALL insect repellents near your nitro finished guitars! Ask GG, she knows. Yes, sadly, I found this out the hard way. I still have a haze on Magic that won't buff out.
j45nick
This is why I drape a piece of clean cotton cloth, about the size of a washcloth, over the lower bout of my guitars when I practice. Nitro is great, but it ain't polyurethane when it comes to resistance to some chemicals. It took me a long, painful time to figure this out. I think the effect will be minimized if you wipe the guitar down with a clean, damp cloth after every session, but make sure it's dry before putting it into the case! Aitch
Yeah, after searching on a couple of other forums last night it looks like it's not too unusual for deodorant to do this. Another one somebody mentioned was Old Spice......as well as sunscreen. I thought DEET was the only thing to stay away from. I'm too old to be wearing Axe anyway....... BigKahune
. Aitch - Sorry to hear about your misfortune. For any guitar with a nitro finish - nitro is very reactive - so chemicals (deodorant, insect repellent, dyes, cleaners, etc), as well as rubber, soft plastic (guitar stands, pickguards), etc, should be avoided unless you've confirmed it is not reactive with nitro finishes. EuroAussie
Probably stupid question - but how do you know when you have a 'nitro' finish ? I think my AL SJ has one, but Im really not sure .... . BigKahune
but how do you know when you have a 'nitro' finish ? I think my AL SJ has one, but Im really not sure .... Pretty much all Gibson guitars are finished with nitrocellulose lacquer. These days they mix in some plastizer to reduce checking on electrics, and I think also on the acoustics. Yes, your AL and SJ should have the nitro. BTW, the finish is listed on the spec sheet - if the Gibson website has a spec sheet for your model. devellis
I clouded a Taylor (a nice old one) with DEET once. Some carefully used Micro-Mesh pads, followed up with Meguiar's polish (the stuff used to polish plastic windows on convertibles) completely corrected it. When the OP mentioned Axe Deoderant, I thought it was a product for a smelly guitar (AKA, an "axe"), or a request for information about how to get the smell out of a guitar. Then I remembered the stuff in the black package on the drugstore deoderant shelf.

Duende
All good guitar players with no stains on their guitars have BO. Life is full of compromises.. I'll go for the blemishes on the guitar if that was the choice. From travelling abroad, I am pretty sure 'Axe', is what we in the UK call Lynx... It smells great
McDuff
Right guard and old spice don't seem to cause this problem oddly enough. Though before testing that it should be noted I only play my guitar with exposed armpits maybe once a week. Also I will be wary of axe in the future, I never sat down and considered the danger of deodorant on guitars.

From travelling abroad, I am pretty sure 'Axe', is what we in the UK call Lynx... It smells great I was just about to say that Matt, lynx is Axe. I've used it through out my guitar playing time (20 years) and I've never had an issue. How does it get from your arm pit to your guitar? I s'pose a sleveless top might allow for it. You don't see those much in the UK though, just a fashion thing. Edit: bugger, I can't believe my 1000th post was about deodorant and sleveless tops. brannon67
Nothing is good when it comes in contact with a nitro finish, even your own sweat will take the finish off eventually. You cant win for losing.

Deet or other insect repellents will soften the nitro almost immediately and if you try to wipe it down after use, it will damage the finish by moving the softened surface or embedding pieces of the soft cloth into the finish. The bottom-line question of this story is that if you are going to play outside, which are you going to sacrifice: a little bit of your blood to a hungry mosquito, or the finish on your guitar?
