John Lee Walker Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Wanting to do a few things to spiffy up my SJ200 Modern Classic. First thing would be the bridge pins. Any suggestions as to make and manufacturer? I want ivory/bone w/black pearl dot inlays. I've been looking at John Pearse and Custom Inlays - any reviews on them? Has anyone here replaced their pickguard on the Modern Classic? Been thinking on that, too, and wondered if any of you can refer someone. Thanks for all your input - I do appreciate it and respect your opinions. It is obvious y'all know your Gibsons:)
TWilson Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 You can look here:http://www.guitarsaddles.com/products.asp I'm thinking maybe you should just have purchased a J-150 in vintage 'burst. They have the plain pickguard with the thin white pinstripe around it. Then I wouldn't have to cringe thinking about what you are thinking of doing to my favorite guitar! ;) Edited to add:http://www.terrapinisland.com/estore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=70&products_id=272 If you must!!
anthonyc007 Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 I put the gibson rosewood pins in mine. Better fit with the bridge, IMHO, then bone or tusq.
TWilson Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Last ditch effort and plea to Johnny Lee: Don't do it!!!! You can't improve this!!! [/img]
John Lee Walker Posted September 27, 2008 Author Posted September 27, 2008 I get the feeling I'm ruining your day, TW! hah - nah, it's just that the more I look at the wheat scroll design the less I like it. I may or may not tinker with it, who knows. Quit yer cringin', I'm just thinkin out loud here:) Yeah, I looked at the rosewood Gibson pins on MusiciansFriend. I like a cream/ivory color contrast to the dark wood on the bridge, with nice black pearl or abalone dot inserts. Thinking the rosewoods would get lost in the mix there somewheres. They do look nice, tho. Any ideas on decals for the front of the ... hehe just kiddin, TW:) Time to head out for soundcheck for tonight, and argue once again with all the karee-okies... Thanks for the replies!
John Lee Walker Posted September 27, 2008 Author Posted September 27, 2008 Lordy, that's a purty pitcher...*whew*
TWilson Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Johnny Lee-Nah, it's a beautiful sunny day here in Orygun and although I love the way MY SJ-200 looks, I believe you can do what ever you wish to YOUR SJ-200. Just putting in my 2 cents for the cause. I felt the sme way you do about the pickguard about 2 years ago. Since then after looking at all the folks who play them and seeing the vintage sunburst version I've come to appreciate them and their history of looking a certain way. Shoot, Buddy Guy plays a natural top SJ-200 and I figure if he can play a guitar with flowers on the pickguard, who am I not to. Not to mention Pete Townshend!! Just consider me as a Gibson missionary trying to keep you from committing a mortal sin but also recognizing your right to do what you will to your very own guitar (and burn forever in the sulphurous fires of guitar Hell!!! Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha <diabolical laughter!!) Just kiddin'. Have a great day!
bigshot Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 If those flowers are good enough for him, they're good enough for me!
Taylor Player Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Give Bob Colosi a call at his business and get set up with what you want. A little extra "Bling" looks good in my opinion. Here is is site. http://www.guitarsaddles.com/ Here is what my double inlay bone (Ebony & abalone) look like on a Gibson Advanced Jumbo....
NevadaPic Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Here is mine w/ RW pins: Those rosewood pins look mighty fine in that bridge! What do they do for the sound of your guitar? I am contemplating some new pins for my J-150 and I am thinking a set rosewood pins might do the trick...
Michael Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I'm going to order the Colosi Bone with Mother-of-Pearl inlays to match the bridge. Someone here did the same thing and it really looked great! I have really received so much good info. on this forum, and I'm spreading the word so my fellow musician friends will attend also. Thanks to everyone here for all the good tips, you guys and gals rock!
John Lee Walker Posted September 29, 2008 Author Posted September 29, 2008 I am leaning towards the Colosi Bone with abalone inlays or MOP as well. I read that the size 2A fits Gibsons, but on their website they give a few measurements for Gibsons. Does anyone here know the correct pin size for the SJ200 Modern Classic by chance?
onewilyfool Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Guitarstrummer had some nice pins on one of his posts before....nice, try this link http://forums.gibson.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=4782
ballcorner Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 What you want for your guitar is a set of Bob Colosi pins. Get the best. He has totally expensive ones made from exotic materials and all of them make your guitar sound way, way better than factory. One day, the people at Gibson are going to wake up and realize that fossilized walrus ivory is all they need to put Martin, Taylor and Maton out of business, but until then we have Bob Colosi. Thank God for Bob Colosi, because without him our guitars would sound like crap.
jannusguy Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 nothing wrong with tricking out your guitar with some fancy after market bling. as long as you realize a lot of it is purely cosmetic. go for it! and then post pics! i'm thinking of getting a raccoon tail to hang off of my J45TV tuners! it'll be the bomb! wonder if bob c. has raccoon tails....
ajsc Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 I saw a video the other day with "Gary Allen." He had an American flag decal plastered on the front of his SJ-200. I love America, but............
Hall Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 First, everyone's mods look great! Just one opinion here. I have tried bone, ivory and rosewood pins on my jumbos and always end up going back to the originals on that Gibson model. They just look right on the series and match the guard accents. Though pins should do nothing to affect tone, the sound seems less sharp with the plain old plastics on the jumbos. I still think Gibson actually knows what they are doing when they build their acoustics. Thats' why I use their string recommendations, per model, as well. Guess I'm an old stick in the mud on those two points. Steve
onewilyfool Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Hey Steve...can I have your old pins that you are not using????? LOL......

I am hoping Bob gets into Rattlesnake rattlers..... I have often heard that putting them in the soundhole adds a certain Mojo and makes you play better too!
onewilyfool Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 and Rattlesnake fangs for finger pics
