barton fink Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 hi iam new to this this is my first topic......but i just installed a maestro vibrola to my gibson sg 61 reissue and it looks awsome and sounds amazing!!! it increases the sustain like a 100 times better than the stop bar tail piece that was on it but just one thing bothers me, the holes were i took off the stopbar are slightly visible, it does not bother me that much but i would like to do something about it to cover it up or sumthing, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.....here are some pics of my baby http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b234/adamprutsok/S7303751.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b234/adamprutsok/S7303750.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b234/adamprutsok/S7303748.jpg
daveinspain Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Very cool... Nice job! i have seen a couple vintage SG's that have had the same mod as what you did... The best solution to coveing up the holes I have seen was someone put peal dots in the holes. Sort of like the dots on the fretboard but bigger. Looked kinda cool... You could also fill the holes with a wooden dowel and the try to match the paint/stain... A good Luthier could probably match it up very well.
RStabe Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Maybe get stainless steel or colored anodized allen or maybe even Torx set screws. Quck, easy and keep the crud out and the threads from gettin buggered up in case ya ever wanna use them again. Allen button head stainless screws might even look better.
hbomb76 Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 It's refreshing to see people doing the "reverse mod" and actually putting the Vibrola's back ON guitars, awesome! And kudos on the sustain comment, a lot of folks think the other way around, and it's always been my experience that the Vibrola doesn't detract at all from the sustain, plus I like the tonal qualities and complexity that piece o' metal adds to the guitar's personality. Not to mention the looks, of course. As far as plugging the stoptail holes, if it were me, I'd take a set of stoptail anchors and cut the tops off of them, notch 'em out so's I can use a screwdriver to torque 'em all the way down, and add some pearloid caps on top of them, done deal. Fine job, my man, be proud. Now...when's Gibson gonna' learn that the Vibrola-equipped '61 Reissue IS a desirable option and bring that baby back??? H-Bomb
Hall Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 BF: I put a Bigsby on a 335 of mine and the guitar is black! I did as RStabe suggested with stainless steel flatheads that fit the threads, and they look like they are just part of the original hardware. Plus, back them out and go back to original on top if I ever wanted to do so. Steve
lemansfanatic Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 Wow that looks awesome man, love the oldschool flavor! Is this a hard piece to install? Do you think it compromises the structural integrety of the necks? I just bought an SG standard and this is exactly what I'm wanting to do but I've heard that the necks are "sensitive" and adding a trem bar could cause probs? I like the engraved tailpiece from the new Angus Young editions but I've had a hard time finding these for sale by themselves...

jjb1rjb Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Can you tell me where you bought that tremolo? That is really cool. Thanks
jameswithesg Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 i thought about the same mod for my 61 ri, but i had played them and wasnt impressed by the whammy, im not sure i like a trmelo on a sg, and the costs i was seeing were quite high, i had seen derek trucks with a 61 and the same mod, but he put the tailpiece on without the whammy which i really liked, which gave me the idea to custom make a tailpiece out of copper without the whammy, which gave me soooo much more tone than before rough estimate on cost??? nd a good luthier could fill those with just about anything you wanted
