ramon_jr Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 what should i buy ladies and gents. im willing to goes as far as 2,000.00 i dont work for bill gates. ive got les paul , explorer, sg, new age explorer, new cabinet, flying v, and pedals gas! give me some relief!!
daveinspain Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I don't think you can find a R7 for 2 grand... Even a traditional is over the 2G mark... I'd be patient save a little more and get a reissue, custom or a traditional... You might think about a classic, I love mine! That you could get for 2G's. I'm talking new though... If you take a chance on ebay or the used market you might get lucky and find what you want at a great price... The key to it all is patients. I know having the money in your pocket gives you GAS...
RichCI Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Not to be a downer, but I'd put the money in the bank for now. With the economy the way it is right now, I think it's a good idea to hold off on any major purchases for a few weeks until Congress gets it's collective head out of it's *** and does whatever they're going to do then wait to see how it works out.
deepblue Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Honestly, and im not being a smart *** here. Save it and buy a reissue when you get enough money. Or put it down to hold one and pay it off. If youre serious about the legendary Les Paul sound then this is the way to go. I should have listened to guys like Tim and FennRx a looong time ago. Im Irish, im stubborn.
ChanMan Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Gibson Firebird $1858 AXE loves his Firebird SG Standard $1659 Nice SGs! LP Studio Premium Plus $1599 Very nice guitars! And now for something completely different.... Just got this yesterday. Awesome guitar for the $$. Good luck! Enjoy the hunt!
KennyF Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 ES 339... And you'll still have enough money left over to take your ole lady out to dinner.
Tim Plains Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Chan, you bought a Strat, that's awesome! Do you have a 'my new guitar' thread anywhere? ramon_jr, that's a tough call. (Canadian prices) A new Les Paul Traditional is under $2,000 if you get a gold or black one. Personally, if I were buying a Les Paul I'd put that money towards a '57 or '58 Les Paul reissue. About $500 to $1,000 more than what you're willing to spend (depending on new or used)...but the way I see it if you're already committing that much money, it would be a mistake not looking into them. I'll go on the record and say it...reissues are the best. There, I said it! Les Pauls aside, my SG Standard is incredible! I rarely play it, but when I do I'm impressed. You could buy one and have $500 left over to spend on a tube amp.
Bluemoon Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Put it back into the economy by blowing it in a strip joint.

I 'spose I should though. Let me get the stickers off (so the wife will quit calling her Minnie Pearl) and I'll get some better pics. Maybe they'll let it slide in the lounge... I don't visit the other forum much anymore.... this one now has everything I need . (Thanks Mike@Gibson!!!!!) AND +1 on the SG + tube amp (or pedals!)
Wolff Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I'd say your best bet if you want to get a new guitar immediately and you want to spend about 2Gs then go for a Les Paul Classic. Be prepared for ridicule around here though if you get a Gibson USA product. ;-)
geyser Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I think you can locate an used or demo R8 for 2000-2500 $ and it would be perfect... good luck!
Flight959 Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 What's stronger the Canadian $ or the American $?? There is currently 1.84 USD to £1..... Its was nearly $2 to £1.... Jobs fuc*ked.. Flight959
Tim Plains Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Be prepared for ridicule around here though if you get a Gibson USA product. ;-) Come on now' date=' nobody's ridiculing anything. Have you played a reissue Les Paul? If you haven't, play one at your local music store the next time you're there. Give it a good 15-20 minutes, then pick up a Gibson USA LP. That's all I'm saying, I'll let you be the judge.... Flight, $1 CDN is around $0.97 US right now. Back in late 2007 when the US dollar really took a dive, $1 CDN got you $1.10 US. That's when I crossed the border and brought this puppy home. Even though it's not a reissue, it's still a great guitar! (That one's for you Wolff ) [img']http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg225/Gibson_Tim/ES-335002.jpg[/img]

Thundergod Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Looks like sticking to your Slash sig will pay at last eh? Glad for you man... now you'll have 2 dream guitars... Congratulations! What model is that Tim? 335? I wouldnt feel confortable with the jack in that position... (When I get the chance, which means whn I travel up north, I think I'll get an ES339 or if I can find one, or any of you guys is willing to order it for me, an ES359).

FennRx Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I should have listened to guys like Tim and FennRx a looong time ago. Im Irish' date=' im stubborn.[/quote'] i forgive you. i understand how hard it is to spend that kind of money on one guitar. to the OP, if you are definitely getting a new Gibson I would check out an R7/R8 (of course) and a Traditional for comparison, an ES-339 and/or an ES-335 or an SG Standard and/or 61 Reissue (I have an SG Std and it is a GREAT guitar....better playing than the few 61 RIs and Historics I have played)
Thundergod Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Indeed Thunder.... would you believe me if I told you I still havent played a reissue.... Flight959 me neither! but I guess they are more common in the UK than they are down here...

[/quote'] See, this is exactly what I mean. To you Tim, a regular Gibson USA is unworthy. To me, with my skill level, the only difference a Custom Shop re-issue would make is my wallet would be lighter and I can have bragging rights. A regular old Gibson USA Les Paul is far more quality than I deserve in the first place. I could easily afford a Custom Shop axe, so it's not like I am jealous on that account. I'm not taking this attitude because I can't have one myself. Obviously you are a popular guy around here and I'll probably get crap for posting this.

[/quote']Yeah, no one actually like's Tim around here... Why do you think that I consider Gibson USA LPs unworthy? I own a 2006 LP Standard and 2007 SG Standard. They're both Gibson USAs and I love them. You seem to have this attitude...come on now...WTF? This is a guitar forum and it's also a friendly environment. If people ask for suggestions or guidance in their purchase, what am I supposed to say? Nobody here cares what your skill level is. That has nothing to do with it...and bragging rights? Where did that come from? A reissue won't make you a better player...but anyone can hear/feel the differences between the two lines. If you can't hear/feel the difference, then why did you even buy a Gibson? Just for the name? Why didn't you save yourself a lot on money and buy an Epiphone Les Paul? My guess is you haven't played a reissue, right? If you haven't then there's no real point in discussing this. If you had played one for a bit, then you would probably agree with myself and the others who also recommend reissue Les Pauls. Keep your Standard (or whatever) and be happy with it, they are great guitars. If it meets your expectations and you're happy with then then we're all happy for you.
