bluezguy
Hey ... I'm in the market trying to buy a used SG Standard. I'm asking you guys as to whether or not you feel the SG Standard necks from Late 1990's until today's are cut and feel the same. Reason I ask is because this past week I've gone out to 2 Sam Ash stores and 2 Guitar Centers to check a few Standards out. To me, I thought I felt differences in neck shapes. Am I nuts or are they consistent from year to year?
BobB
The final shaping/sanding of the neck is done by hand, so each guitar may have a slightly different feel.
strat-o-steve
All newer standards have a 50's round profile neck. This is a fatter neck. It seems to me that the older SG's had a slim-taper neck. I own 3 gibson guitars with the '50's neck profile and all 3 are WAY different!
Kineman Karma
I am fortunate to own an 05 Ebony SG Standard. The neck profile feels great just like a 60's slim tapered neck. The width at the nut and the 12th fret just fit my hand like a glove with fast and comfortable action feel. On the other hand, I have a 2010 Herritage Cherry SG 61RI and that also has a 60's slim tapered neck but the width at the nut and the 12th fret are huge compared to the standard. I can play a full gig with the RI but find my hand aching after the show as opposed to my standard. Maybe I need to get the RI set up properly again, I dunno? BigKahune
.... To me, I thought I felt differences in neck shapes. Am I nuts or are they consistent from year to year? As Bob said. As well as the neck profile is changed from time to time. For those reasons, if you are particular about your neck profile, check out potential purchases in person to you can feel the neck profile. Some of the "exclusive" models given to certain stores can have the 60's slim taper such as mine (2010 GC model), whereas others will have the 50's rounded style. bluezguy
Thanks for all yer help and comments! Today, my SG Standard arrived. Aside from some obvious lies from the ebay seller, the guitar is superb! I've just spent 2 hours on it through my 2466 VM marshall and the thing has me smoked! My 2003 Firebird was my primary instrument until now. Maybe in a few days I'll change my mind but, for hard rockin' Blues, this thing is hard to beat. I don't find the 498 & 490 combo lacking in ANYTHING. They are a totally unique sounding set of pups which is exactly what I was looking for. BTW, this neck is a clone of my Firebird V. With my large hands, it seems thin ... I love it! On stage, there is ZERO space for tuning between songs so, I gotta have 4 guitars up there. My LP Standard with BurstBuckers is my open D tuning, my Firebird V with her screamin' stock ceramics will now be my open G tuning, my Epi G-400 Les Paul Custom with P-94s is my open E tuning and now I believe this 2005 SG Standard has immediately moved into the A440 conventional tuning slot. Sunday, I'll be with my Fender DeVille ... hopefully my ears will still be intact. Happy JULY 4th to all of yaz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kineman Karma
How do you like the Fender Twin? I'm thinking about getting a Super Twin.. Mate I absolutely love the Fender Pro Tube Twin Amp I have. Heavy bugger but certainly worth the pain because it definately gives me tone for days over my Marshall, Fender Blues Deluxe and Blues Junior. Even though the BJ would be second in line from the Twin Amp. Gibson Guitars and the right Fender Amp are my choices. Tone Tone Tone.
GuitarTrouble
Interesting thing I've learned about neck sizes, neck profiles, etc. It's not just how thick a neck is from front to back, but the actual shape of the neck profile has as much to do with the feel. For example, I have a new SG Standard. The neck is not what I would consider overly fat from front to back (and I have really small hands) but it is what I would term a "D" profile with more shoulder, so it feels more "substantial" than (for the sake of comparison) my hollowbody Gretsch, which is around the same depth from the middle of the back of the neck but is tapered on the sides to a "C" bordering on a very soft "V" which gives it a very different feel than the SG Standard. When I think of a 50's neck on a Gibson, a think of the very large, rounded neck on a '56 Les Paul. That all being said, SG Standards themselves do appear to vary, however the new SG Standards that I played at shops when shopping for mine were pretty consistant.....slightly chunky "D" profile (but no baseball bats) with 1.69" nut widths. I find my new SG to be very comfortable, the bit of extra girth really makes barre chords easier to play and doesn't hinder speed (I don't play very fast anyway lol). The best thing of course is to go out and try as many as possible, that's half the fun anyway......
dcooper830
My 2009 SG Standard (cherry) has a pretty chunky neck... and I LOVE it!! Man that guitar is pure Heaven to play!!!!
rjay777
Interesting. I didn't know the standards varied on neck sizes. I guess I always assumed only the '61 RIs had the slim tapered. As much as I love my SG classic, I'll never totally get used to the 50's neck.
