tcrews04
Newby here... I have J-45 A/E with the original pickup that comes in the J45s. However, I am still not incredibly impressed with the sound of the guitar through the pickup. I have been researching quite heavily and have taken a liking to the LR Bagss M1A soundhole pickup. My question is, is this a better pickup than what is currently in my guitar? I have heard rave reviews about this system. Anything will help... EuroAussie
Hi and welcome to the forum. Firstly, what is the pup thats in your J-45 now ? Personally I found the M1a to be one frustrating experience. The tone always sounded to me too magnetic and sometimes quite phasey. Im in fact selling my M1a. But I know others like it and are supporters of it. I have a Matrix Infinity installed into my SJ and combined with a Fishman Aura Spectrum DI it delivers a very warm, microphone sounding tone. greatwhite_10
Also a newbie here but nothing was mentioned about what you were playing through. Is it a PA or amp? It would make a difference in your choice on pickups. Just a thought. On my Ovation 12 string acoustic, I use an LR Baggs sound hole PU and it does have a tell tale metal sound to it but that's OK with this 12 string. I pick and strum accordingly. I'd like to Jangle Box it but don't want to put the $$$$ out right now. On my Taylor 414 CE (Customized) I have the Fishman Ellipse system and it's warm through a PA or Acoustic Amp. My Epiphone Masterbuilt acoustic also uses an LR Baggs PU and it gives me a lot more punch and "rockier" sound which I like for certain songs. Some songs I just can't lay back on and I select this guitar over the Taylor. When I tried to use the Taylor on the same songs, I felt like it just wasn't cutting it. All my guitars have been "luthiered" and set up properly, so I rule out that part of the equation. Good luck in you selection.
malcolmallan
I have the LR Baggs pickup in my SJ-200 custom elite and I am not massively impressed. I just got it set up by my tech and he wasn't either.... I have very little treble response - it all comes from the bottom four strings :-( not particularly happy given the price of the guitar. rar
I have very little treble response - it all comes from the bottom four strings That's typically due to a setup issue -- either the bottom or the saddle or the bottom of the saddle slot is not perfectly flat, resulting in more pressure on the bass side of the transducer than the treble side. I'd have expected a proper setup to have fixed this. -- Bob R

Jeremy Morton
pick up an M-1 and wire the 2 together. you will love the blend of the 2. Use a Y cable and put each pickup into a seperate channel and blend away.
