CesarM Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 hey, i have a gibson les paul classic and i was wondering if u could please tell me how can i darken its finish because when it is exposed to light the finish looks very light. and by the way the finish is heritage cherry sunburst. thanks!
Thundergod Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Welcome to the forum. You can try setting her on fire... but somehow I dont think that will turn up as desired... Im sure any of the more knowledgeable (spell?) folks will stop by to greet you and give you some answers.
sycephant Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Should have gotten a faded like thundergod(love it btw). The best(and safest) is to let it age. After time it will darken and look pretty cool. Other than you'd have to do a lot of work and risk destroying the whole thing.....if you don't mind that, set it on fire.
CesarM Posted September 28, 2008 Author Posted September 28, 2008 hahaha thanks :) but i wouldnt take that risk because im just 12 years old turning 13 on november so i wouldnt get another les paul :)
Thundergod Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 You are young... let her grow up with you... in time you will notice how she has aged and will love her more. You should take pics (with good light) and then compare each year...
CesarM Posted September 28, 2008 Author Posted September 28, 2008 yeah :) yeah i will keep this guitar for my whole life, yeah, maybe tomorrow because its very late at night and my parents are sleeping and dont want to wake them up.. i will take the pictures and put them up here in the forum.. thanks for the suggestion both of you :) and in how much time do you think it could get darker?
Tim Plains Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 What part of the finish don't you like, exactly? If it's the red, you can always sunbath the guitar. After a lot of hours in the sun, the red will start to fade and the guitar will look more like an Iced Tea finish. You'd have to cover up the fretboard and electronics. It's not that I don't trust your abilities, but seeing as how you're fairly young and that's an expensive guitar you should ask your dad to do it for you, if you do this.
MikeRom Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 The tendency will be for it to (over time) get lighter, not darker. You'd probably need a re-finish to darken it.
Les Paul Fanatic Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 It's only going to get lighter with age, if you have the money send it back to Gibson and ask them if they could sand the original finish off and redo the finish in whatever you're looking for. Three tone sunburst (cough cough).
Wolff Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Can you post a photo of the guitar plz? I thought all Gibson USA guitars had a fairly consistent color. I'd highly advise not attempting some do it yourself re-finishing! Love it for its uniqueness. Do you like the way it sounds?
ChanMan Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 I'd say the natural oils of your hand may darken it over time... but that would mean a lot of hand rubbing and touching and very little cleaning and wiping down... not something I would tend to recomend, as a general rule. I like to wipe down my guitars after playing. For what it's worth, my guitar is also very bright in direct light... but that's showbiz! Welcome to the forum, and can't wait to see the pics!

[/quote'] Be happy with what you have young man. My Slash looks completely different in various lights. At night time she looks a very Yellow/Brown Vintage..... During the day she's a definate competition winner.. I would not do anything to the finish..... You will regret it... Flight959

MikeRom Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 and should i post the picture w/ the pickguard or without the pickguard? Definitly!
Wolff Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 and should i post the picture w/ the pickguard or without the pickguard? Without pickguard would be better so more of the finish shows. Hurry now! We're all waiting.....
Les Paul Fanatic Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 PPPPPPPPPPPPIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICCCCCCCCCCCCCCCSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
nolongermike@gibson Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Cesar, I would lie awake at night dreaming and praying for a Les Paul, and couldn't imagine being able to own one at 12. You're a lucky guy. I was in my early 20's before I got one. Love it as-is, and as you grow up with it the finish will change a little over time, but not as much as you will. I wouldn't advise doing a thing to it, love it as it is and count yourself a very lucky guy. Whoever bought that for you loves you a LOT!
stymye Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Mine has darkend over the years, the only thing I can figure is I keep it in the case when I'm not using it. the binding and other plastic is darker too. ofcourse the guitar will be 23 yrs old in october
