EVOL!
I am selling some unused gear and saving up for a new mic or two to widen my collection and for recording demos with my drummer. Right now I have a couple Shure SM58s, a boat load of SM57, a Shure BETA52 (my drummer has a Shure drum mic kit), and I just bought a Blue Spark for vocals and acoustic guitar. With the same mics everything starts to sound the same when you get it on tape/in Garage Band. Basically, I need a mic or two to record my guitar cab & drums and maybe a different dynamic mic for vocals at rehearsals. Cedric Bixler of Mars Volta rocks a white MD421 live. My budget will be around $300 and I am looking at Sennheiser MD421 Sennheiser e906 I poked around on CraigsList so I know I can get these used for a decent price. Any other mics I should look at? Any preference, MD421 vs e906, for a multipurpose dynamic mic?
SamWhips
Those are two great mics. The 421 is a great all around mic. Great for rack toms or guitar cabs, really. I really like using them when recording a band all in the same room because the polar pattern is so tight, you don't really get any bleed from the other instruments. The e906 is a pretty all around mic, as well. Good on a snare or a guitar cab, I have even used them for horns. It's kind of hard to say... can you get both?? EVOL!
... can you get both?? That is not an unrealistic goal now that I have seen used MD421s for $250. Just wish I could find a white one ;)
SamWhips
That thing is sweet! Never seen one before. I think that they are definitely both great mics to have in your arsenal, BUT you can do a lot of the things you would do with an e906 with one of your 57s and 58s. With your 57s, 58s, the Beta52A (on the kick) and a 421 on your toms (put it on the floor tom and 58s on the racks), you will have a great drum sound (Beta52A's are one of the best kick mics in my opinion besides the D12). So, all that said, I would go with the 421. We have 5 of them at the studio I work in. Also, if blues is what you're playing, the 421 will give you a nice, warm and fuzzy tone. Enjoy and let me know what you get.
Enzo Heavenly
For vocals I would suggest you the Shure beta 58A
