TGHBass
Hi all, I just purchased a number of sets of D/Addario Long Scale ProSteels and of all my basses, these strings (the E) doesn't fit on my 2005 Les Paul Standard Bass. What the...? These strings are tapered at the exact point where the nut is causing buzzing on the first fret. Now I'm wondering which make of strings will fit. Please help! Thanks, Rob

Thanks, Rob The 2005 Les Paul Standard has that beautiful and massive Warwick bridge & tailpiece, and because of that you'll find that some brands of strings are not long enough. I have two of the LP Stds, and use DR strings on them - no problem; the taper goes past the nut about an inch. The DRs sound very good and last a long time. I use "Hi-Beams" on mine, but DR offers many different types to suit your taste. I really can't suggest a different brand (and I'm sure there are many other options that will work), but I've used DRs on all my basses for years now, and love the sound of them. The Hi-Beams can get me a very nice piano-like sound, great harmonics when tapped, and they bend pretty easily. BTW: The LP Standards are my favorite basses - a little heavy - but worth the pain . Get in touch with George Santos at D'Addario. He helped me on a problem I had with a set of Nylon Tapewound strings. D'Addario Customer Svc. (1 (800) 323-2746) He asked me to measure the the string in question, from the ball to the base of the nut. This was on a Fender Am. Std. strung through the body. I'm totally sold on D'Addario bass strings.Best of luck with your problem man.
TGHBass
Hey Kelvinator, I just got off the phone with George Santos and I must say, I was really impressed. He told me that the sets I bought were likely from a batch that wasn't standard size. Like he did for you, he asked me to measure the 'E' string from the ball to the base of the nut and when it came in at 36 1/4" he said that that was wrong and he'd send me out replacements today. Problem solved! Thank you very much for the suggestion. Robert Get in touch with George Santos at D'Addario. He helped me on a problem I had with a set of Nylon Tapewound strings. Kelvinator
Robert - Glad you've found a solution, but ya gotta give gsgbass the credit. Have fun with the Standard. I see on your list that you have a Triumph. I was just wondering if you ever play it out, and if you like the sound. I've always wanted one, but I'm not a collector, and don't keep basses I don't play. Anyway, I've never played one and would appreciate your opinion. Are they just collectible or do they play & sound good too?
TGHBass
Kelvinator, You're correct. I'm new here and got mixed up. gsgbass was the one who pointed me in the correct direction. I sincerely thank him for that!! I hope he reads this. In regard to my Triumph bass... I've played it live many, many times. It's a wonderful bass. It's even heavier than my LP Standard. The short scale is pretty cool too. Feels more like a guitar than a bass. To be honest, the sound is better than that of my LP Standard. In the studio it always sounds great, has tons of tones and tends to draw a lot of attention from other players. I lucked out buying mine a few years ago from someone who didn't really understand what it was. Mine is in mint condition. Very rare for a 71 Triumph. All original. All parts. Even the case is immaculate. Robert - Glad you've found a solution, but ya gotta give gsgbass the credit. Have fun with the Standard. I see on your list that you have a Triumph. MrNylon
Hey TGHBass, Hi Rob. I'm glad George was able to work with you on the problem on your strings. They really do stand behind their product. Have a good one man. Glenn

I have a 2005 LP Std Cherryburst I'll have to sell first to justify the need for another bass. I've been saying I'm going to sell it for a couple of years now, but somehow can't make myself do actually do it.
TGHBass
Occasionally I see one for sale. The decent ones go for $1800 and up. Right now there's a good one (subjective) at: (http://austin.craigslist.org/msg/2469981235.html) for $2500. Same year as mine and looks to be almost as good too. Hard to tell by the photos though. It appears to have an extra strap knob. These basses were really made well and very expensive for the time however, I've seen some for sale that are so badly beat up that you really wonder what happened. Anyway, all the best. Keep in touch and let me know if you end up with one. BTW... my Les Paul Money bass sounds great too. That's good to know - If I run across a deal on one, I'll consider it. I have the first version - a "Double Cut" (same thing) and I love it. I put Lace Alumitone guitar humbuckers and a 9V Aguilar OBP-3 in it, unbelievable range of sounds- all great. I usually use the Double Cut and my 2001 LP Std. on stage. The LP Std. has 3 EMG humbuckers (added pup at the neck) and an 18V OBP-3 inside. I can get sounds out of it from an EBO to a Ric, and I love to play it - but it's too heavy for an old guy to use all night. The Double Cut is light and plays great (love the neck) - I usually use that for the last 2 sets, so I'll have enough energy left to move cabs afterwards.......... I guess I'll try to sell my other LP Std, and then start looking for a Triumph, I just don't want to give the bass away due to this economy - prices seem pretty soft now; of course that can be a good thing when you're buying............... Man - this Gibson bug is a curse!
Kelvinator
Yep - that's a nice one in Austin! Now you got me thinking!!
TGHBass
Oh, oh! Very sorry! I know the situation. It would keep me awake at night. I searched for over 6 years to find my Triumph. Many times I almost purchased ones that were less than what I really wanted. It's interesting that you've done mods to your basses. All mine are currently completely stock. That said, I've been considering swapping out the TB pickups on my LP Standard for EMG HB's. The only thing holding me back is that the EMG pickups do not come in chrome. I even called them to ask if they'd do a special item for me and they totally dropped the ball. I may buy their HB's in cream and change my pickup mounting rings to chrome ones. Might look good. Maybe not. Probably safer to switch to saxophone. Yep - that's a nice one in Austin! Now you got me thinking!!

I've changed out the Gibson TB+ humbuckers because of a terrible hum that happens in certain rooms I play (happened with 4 out of 4 Gibsons with TB+ pups). I like chrome pups too, but guitar-size chrome bass humbuckers are hard to find. I tried Rio Grande Pitt Bulls in the LP - they sounded like crap, then I went to EMGs. The EMGs sound good, but unremarkable and can't compare to the Lace Alumitones in the Double Cut. I was skeptical about using guitar pups in a bass, but the Alumitones are simply amazing! I didn't lose any lows, the midrange is very present but not "honky", and the highs are crystal clear without being harsh; they also bring out incredible harmonics when you tap the strings. These Lace pups bring out every little nuance of every note you play. When I have the cash, I'm definitely putting Alumitones in the LP, but they're $100 each, and I need 3 of them. Another good thing: They're Chrome! I would highly recommend trying these in your LP. Does Musicians Friend let you return pups if you don't like them? TGHBass
I've never heard of anyone using guitar pickups in a bass. The Lace Alumitones look very interesting. My Spector bass has EMG's and it's the best sounding bass I own. My EMG pickups are very hot and smooth. Now you have me wondering. Curse you!! I love my router and soldering gun! My Spector bass has EMG's and it's the best sounding bass I own. My EMG pickups are very hot and smooth. Now you have me wondering. Curse you!! Ha! I like to experiment. Anyway, if there is a way you can try them, you should. Most online music stores have 30 - 45 day return policy, so if that applies to pickups I'd give 'em a shot. The Alumitones are a totally different animal, and have to be experienced to be believed. I did email Lace before I bought mine, and they saw no reason they wouldn't work for bass - they were right!
