taxman
I have the Inspired By Casino in Natural so I said what the heck, do the Lennon mods to my Standard in burst. No truss rod cover change, but I put the black ring in place and got a new pickguard which I attached a foil 'E'. Wallah! Now I can play "Revolver" stuff on my burst and "Let It Be" stuff on my natural. My Lennonized Casino. What a lot of work! I will post pictures of the difficult process if anyone wants them. zerobox94
Nice! Where did you find a black ring that actually fits?
clarkuss
Awesome! Didn't the IBJL pickguard fit on the standard? I'm in the long process of converting my two standard's into JL style models. Still need a 2 hole TRC for the NA and blue stickers for the inside. I just received two sets of nylon saddles and Corian nut blanks so they'll be going in soon for a set up with these mods and the Natural is getting Gold Grovers. It's a lot of fun. Is your black ring plastic like the IB or did you have to get a rubber one?
taxman
No, the IBJL pickguard did not fit on the standard. As you know the standard and the IBJL necks join the body at different frets and that throws off the spacing and size of the pick guard a bit. I sketched out a template and had someone off the internet make one. My natural IBJL came with a pickguard with a foil E, but I didn't want to remove that one so I just ordered a foil E off another internet guy and put that on my new pickguard. The ring is a rubber one. I had a plastic one perfect size except for thickness. I'm always eyeballing things at hardware stores looking for a plastic one that will work. Till I find one, the black rubber ring that I picked up at a Home Depot is doing the job. Inside blue sticker and two screw truss rod cover I am not sweating right now. If I come across them I'll buy them, but it was that simple black ring and the foil E that I notice on John's and that's what I wanted changed. Nylon saddles? Heck no. I'm loving the sound of my Casino as is and I do not want to tinker with tone changing stuff like saddles just to be overly picky. I love John Lennon but not that much to screw with my Casino's bridge. Hey, this was just a simple mod project whose end result makes me smile more when I pick up my standard Casino. That's all I wanted.
clarkuss
It looks great! But I can't help drooling over that IBJL. If only they had also done the 2 screw TRC. RE: Saddles/Nut... I play John Lennon in a Beatles tribute band so I'm going for the full conversion for my own picky sense of authenticity. I'm planning on buying either 2 IB or 1 USA model next year sometime but I am currently paying off a Rickenbacker 325 and on the hunt for a J160e so it will have to be next year I haven't been able to find the plastic rings either so mine have rubber washers on them:
taxman
Your guitars look pretty fine to me. I can't help drooling over that IBJL. I agree. When Epi announced and released photos of the Inspired By Lennon Casinos I was stunned. I was also a little peeved because I had just bought my Standard about a year earlier. If I didn't already have my Standard which plays and sounds great I would definitely have bought both the burst and natural IBJLs. What scares me now is that I have a feeling (following the Inspired by Texan) that Epi will one day soon be releasing an Inspired By Paul Casino. I will probably love it (Gibson style headstock with a Bigsby!) and will have to wrestle with, "Do I really need three Casinos? Is a Bigsby Casino worth adding to my two already?" tweed2
Just so that I can follow along, can someone describe the ring that is being discussed here, plastic, metal? How thick is it? What is the outside diameter? Matte or shiny finish? How is it different from the toggle switch rings on Les Pauls, other than maybe not having the lettering? Whenever anyone talks about doing the Lennon makeover, pulling the guard and adding the ring seem to be the two major items. For the amount of effort I've seen going into getting this right (or close anyway) there must be some info on this somewhere. And, it can't be too hard to make a replica. Anybody? guitar dog
I'm looking for the same info on the black washer. I took the pickguard off my natural Casino for kicks, and it looks "right" - I guess my mind expects to see a naturan Casino with out the pickguard. Now it looks like it needs the black washer. taxman
can someone describe the ring that is being discussed here, First off the Les Paul toggle switch rings are a lot larger. I first thought of buying one of those and simply flipping it over to hide the lettering, but when I went to buy one I saw they were far too large. The Epi black ring on my Inspired By Lennon Casino is a shiny gloss black plastic ring, an inch in diameter and 1/32 in thickness. The inner diameter is quite large to fit the switch through it (I ain't taking mine apart just for that measurement). I called Epi/Gibson customer service a while ago, played dumb and pretended my Casino didn't come with one. They told me they don't have a part number for it, I was out of luck. Supposedly these rings pop up on the net every once in a while. Till then the rubber ring is OK.
GuitarTrouble
If my memory is correct, didn't Epiphone offer a "Lennon Kit" a few years ago? I think it came with the correct pu selector switch ring (which I think may be rubber on the original), a set of vintage style Grover Rotomatics and the little plugs that were in the pickguard screw holes. I'm sure with the "Inspired By" that the kit is long dc'ed.
Casino4Life
Taxman- Where did you find the black selctor switch grommet? Does it fit over the metal ring or under and what size?
taxman
Taxman- Where did you find the black selctor switch grommet? Does it fit over the metal ring or under and what size? I found it at Home Depot or Lowes. I forgot which exactly but they both have an aisle with all sorts of washers and grommets. Just start fishing through the drawers until you get a black rubber one as close to an inch in outside diameter as you can find. The inner diameter will be too small to have the switch pass through it so you will have to razor blade it wider until it does fit. Don't worry about it being a clean razor job because that will be hidden by the metal threaded ring of the switch -- the rubber ring goes UNDER the metal threaded ring. When you unscrew the metal nut that holds the switch to the guitar, pull the selector switch out and you will find a very thin and small metal ring on the guitar. It is there to protect the finish for when you screw the switch in place. Place your rubber grommet on top of that small metal ring and simply screw the switch into place over the black ring. taxman
Here's a before and after. The guitar was obviously fine before, but that big overbearing puffy 'E' on the pickguard and the nakedness of the no black grommet around the switch doesn't look as nice as a Lennonized Casino. taxman
There is one other thing (if you really want to be picky). I got a new pickguard made for my Lennonized Casino because if you look at the pickguard that the Standard Casino comes with you will see it actually swoops down low and covers a bit of the area around the switch. With a black ring around that switch, the original pickguard would cover even more area. Now note John's pickguard and how it falls short of the switch and you can see the entire black ring. If I am going to the trouble of putting a ring on my Casino I sure want it to be seen like John's. So I made a template for a Casino guard that would be more like John's and if you look at my Lennonized Casino you can see the entire black ring just like John's. taxman
where did you get the pick guard with the correct "E" on it I got the foil 'E' from this guy. Great, fast service. Just scroll down. http://www.axetremecreations.com/products/69/764/epiphone_e_mirrored_replacement_decal__sticker/ I got my pickguard made from a company I do not want to get any more business. They were slow as hell and rude as hell. In fact their name should be Pickguard Hell not what it is. I won't be recommending them to anyone. You can just use the pickguard your guitar came with and slap that foil 'E' on it. Sure it droops a little lower than mine that was made for me, but it is what it is. If you really want a pickguard made, search the net and you'll see there are a number of guys that do it.
