LizardK101
Hey I'm new here, so Hi I'd like to know what most people have changed the standard PU in an Explorer too. I want to change the 496R & 500T I just get the feel they're 'Cheap' and don't enjoy the sound I'm trying to choose between either BurstBucker 1 in the Neck, With a BurstBucker 2 in the bridge. I like the sound of BurstBucker Pro Neck & BBP Bridge but no one has put them in an Explorer what would be the recommendations between the BB 1&2 and BBP N&B? Thanks
veeman
Neither. I'd go with 57 Classic Plus in both positions.
LizardK101
Neither. I'd go with 57 Classic Plus in both positions. Ok well say I'd already ordered the BBP's what would I expect to get from them? Combined I prefer them to the stocks, but heard them, thought they had a little on the BurstBuckers but not much also like that 'Old Tone' And it seems they can go from Rock, Hard Rock, Metal very versatile
ne14t?
I think the Burst Buckers are just a little bit hotter then a standard equipment Gibson PUP, but dont quote me on that one I havent researched much into the Gibson PUPs but I have heard the Thunderhorse explorer with the Burst Buckers and it really doesnt sound much different then my 76 explorer. Most people I know with this guitar use it to play metal so its always some type of active pickup going into them be it blackouts or EMGs.

Thanks ne14t? didn't know how it would sound & wanted to know what was the best option, seems BBP would maybe suit a thicker body like a Les Paul as it's hotter sound and suits the guitar, I did take the advice and went with the 57/57+ combo thanks to Veeman, it's quite popular and has the versatility of Rock, Hard Rock & Metal. That would be the problem imo with EMG it seems you can't take away from the heavy sound 60/81 gives and it's Hetfield's choice, where as taking the advice of veeman and the 57/57+ I can add distortion, and effects but still go back to the Blues, Rock & Metal the Explorer does so well. Shame that the 496R & 500T aren't really good on it as they at times cancel each other out.
ThisIsElectricMud
Have you been able to spend some time playing with the '57s? How do you like them so far? I really like the Dimarzio 36th Anniversary PAFs that came in my Explorer Pro. Previous owner had already installed them before we traded, & they are an outstanding vintage-style set. No Problem, yeah the downside to active pickups is they kinda leave you stranded within the metal genre pretty much, The EMG 89 series is my personal choice for actives as its able to be split into a single coil so you can go back to that twangy sound, but your still left with the pretty sterile sound of the actives. Probably why I havent put them in my Explorer yet! Have you been able to spend some time playing with the '57s? How do you like them so far? LizardK101
Hey Guys Sorry haven't posted in a while, I did select the choice of '57 Classic in the neck & '57+ in the bridge, sent it off to be set up for a better action to suit .11-.48 and installed pickups The guy did ask me though was I sure, from what I've seen. I like the Rhythms Bass & mellow sound of the '57Classic and the High end scream and with the gain as well of the '57+ in the bridge. shame there aren't any YT clips with the 57/57+ on an Explorer in action. I'm not the only one who has got really nervous like an expectant father, when sending away for some work, am I? lol

Hey guys got my Explorer back the other day with '57/'57+ setup and it is fantastic, been playing it as much as I can "Ibis" you're right It sounds great with the tone, richness and range you expect from any Gibson And it's far better than the standard set of the 496R/500T. I really am grateful for all the advice and I'm so glad went with it!
