You may get some varied answers here and it all comes down to personal taste. The amp you use may also have some variance.
SGgypsyboy
it's quite possible due to the fact that they both have different neck joints. The Standards have the longer , more stable neck joint and the 61 has the much smaller joint. could affect sustain...

SG Jones
Hopefully someone who owns or owned both might give me there opion. thanks I own one of each. Both are very nice guitars.I am very fond of both, but I prefer the '61 RI because I like vintage SGs a lot. The '61 RI body is thinner in the tips of the horns like the old ones. It also sounds more like an old SG. My SG Std sounds more aggressive and more Les Paul like to me. Mostly, but not entirely because of the pickups. For example I also had an SG-3 that I recently traded in on an SG Classic. The SG-3 is an SG Std with three '57 classics. It did not have the tone that the '61 RI has. The '61 RI has lots of high end, but nice and round, and never shrill. Having said that, however, I really like playing the Standard in my classic rock band with loud Marshalls. Just plain nasty. There is no noticeable difference in sustain acoustically. The 498T is a bit hotter than the '57 classic plugged in. As Paul said try them both and see what you think. You could always buy one of each to make your decision easier???
imagemarine
I have the 61 but have played many standards as well. The 57's and more important (the neck on the 61's -small neck joint) make a huge difference between 61 and std in my opinion. Good luck with your decision. Go try them at local Guitar center and bring or ask for a chromatic tuner!!! Enjoy, Brian
Kineman Karma
I have them both, they are really two different beast all together. At the moment I am playing my Standard a hell of a lot more than my 61RI. Because my RI is very much like custom shop build, I am very concious about which gigs I use it for. Per say, for my Standard! well that get's used for any gig really. My 61RI I really only use for outdoor Festival/Community event show's that do not involve Liquor. Both wicked AXES!! but only for this period my ears are enjoying the 490R and 498T in my standard as opposed to the 57's classic's in my 61RI. Love them both anyway
ALFA ROMEO CORSE
the most inportant differences between a SG Standard and 61RI are the neck profile, pickups, and small pickguard. Those SG are fantastic. I' ve got a SG Standard, I' m in love with it
lewis vits
i understand what you're saying about the neck joint, i have a very resonant standard which stood out for me at the store, far more than a 61. it might be a one off thing but it's fantastic, not to mention that i added a custom shop tailpiece. it's just something you have to try out. the neck joint thing could possibly be a factor. note that a lot of late 60's/early 70's sg's have this higher neck joint. but i think it was added to strengthen the otherwise weak joint present. hope this helps!
