Epiphone SG 400...fake?

It looks fine to me it has all the usual genuine appointments and shows no sign of being a fake.

The colour appears to be Worn Cherry

Thanks for the reply mate, but what about the serial? Wasn't supposed to have 11 instead of 10 starting with numbers? At least I got it from a retail store not likely to work with the fake ones but I wanted to make sure it wasn't the case.

Anyways, any other opinions? :)

Here's a sure-fire way to tell the Chinese fakes. They all seem to have the headstock attached about 1/3 the way down the neck, with an angle-join - through the neck. Epiphone (thankfully) now joins all their headstocks at the very top of the neck, at the base of the peghead. Every fake I've ever seen has the neck pieced in an altogether different place. This used to be characteristic of the early Asian guitars. And, some makes still use this approach. But, it's not commonly seen on high-quality guitars, thesedays. And, Epiphones just aren't constructed this way. Nor are Gibsons. That's the first thing I look for. Your pics looks pretty authentic to me.

Hi there guys, I hope you can give me a hand here...

I'm suspicious about the guitar I received like 5 days ago from Steve's Music Store in Montreal. It's an SG400 cherry, here I have the pics:

It's fake, send it back immediately.

No, I'm only kidding. Steve's is a legitimate dealer, they're not going to be dealing with fakes. They're not going to jeopardize their Gibson dealership selling forgeries.

The first two digits are the year, the next two are the month. Your SG was made in September 2010. The next two digits indicate the factory, 20 is one of the smaller Chinese sub contractors like Dae Won. The remaining digits indicate the number of the guitar, 0813 means it was the 813th guitar made. Yes, the ones made in the huge Epiphone factory in Qingdao have 5 digits, because they make a helluva a lot of guitars there - they could conceivably make 10,000 Epis in a month. There's no need for factory 20 to have a 5 digit production # because they don't make that many Epiphones.

Now go and play the hell out of you're freakin' guitar and stop obsessing...

Yeah I know but the serial number didn't give the confidence, only 10 digits and starting with a number....there was something strange lol.

Yup, I knew the codesbut I wasn't sure how to read it with only 10 numbers lol...and yeah I'm rocking arleady with it, I'm actually playing a System of a Down tribute band with the SG400 and it sounds just what I wanted, didn't have the cash for a Gibson tho but it's a confirmed Epiphone at least lol

Here are more pics of the neck (just making sure that it's original lol):

Thank you all mates, a lot! :D

You did the right thing, you bought it from a reputable dealer. With so many fakes out there, that's the safest way to buy on line.

As for serial #s, they're a guide but there are some variations year to year, factory to factory. And if someone has the capability to fake a guitar, they can copy a legit serial #.

Good luck

By the way, if the Epiphone logo has that "holographic" effect with the emblem, is it original? Obviously the logo isn't s sticker or anything that looks pretty cheap or fake, but I completely forgot to see this aspect. My logo displays that change of colours depending where the light is and my position, I heard this was the way to tell if it was original? Correct me if I'm wrong lol

I uploaded a little video of it to youtube, sorry by camera motion but I tried to actually get the effect on screen:

Thanks :)

It's nacre, or "mother of pearl". Some Epi models have it, some don't. Current G400 do.

Well, just got confirmation that my guitar is genuine Epiphone (word from a reputable store down here in my country). They said it had all the stuff that is supposed to have an Epi and that the logo also indicates it's original (mother-pearl style) so yeah I'm relaxed now lol

Thanks everyone :)

Nothing to worry about if your guitar comes from Steve's. I'm down there every couple of weeks to see what's new or just to torture myself. I was there this past weekend actually and almost walked out with a nice Ovation acoustic that was on sale.

They're probably the most reputable shop in Montreal, not that we have a lot - in fact we have none of the music superstores like in the US or western Canada. They're just about the only place that rock bands deal with when they come to town and need something.
