help id'n LP guitar

Hi,

I have just aquired a LP Gibson very cheap from an auction but am having trouble identifying it. I think its a 59 re-issue, it has a sunburst body but I'm not sure about the wood, cream open pick ups, a cream scratch plate and the fret board has dotted frets. I cannot find any serial number anywhere other then on the neck bolt plate there is a sticker with 79234 made in the usa, i have tried matching this on the internet but it is not found.

Can anyone help id or if its genuine?

Thanks

need pics, but....

59 RIs have trapezoid markers, like most LPs. the PUs may be aftermarket, but gibson doesnt make double whites/cremes.

the fact that it has a bolt on neck says it is fake. a few cheap epis have bolt on necks, but ALL gibson LPs have set necks. and the serial number wouldnt be on a sticker.

Sounds like a Les Paul copy... There is no such thing as a bolt on neck to the body on any Gibson... Gibson uses a neck tenon which is an extension of the neck that gets glued into the body of the guitar. A completely different system. Also a Gibson would have a serial number stamped into the back of the head stock... I hope you didn't pay more than a couple hundred dollars for it...

Bummer! sounds like a fake to me. I bought a baseball card once from an auction before I had a chance to inspect it. It was a reprint. I lost $20 and never did that again. Maybe you can thrash it on YouTube and make some money back.

I have to note on thing and one thing only guys... gibson has made guitars that look like les pauls and have bolted necks... (invader, marauder and all those models from the same lienage? (spelling please!)). And the sported dotted fretboards too... the SN thing will make this one a fake... but pics would be nice...

thanks guys, sorry cant get any pics yet. My old man, former carpenter reckons the body and neck is mahogony, it is not very heavy in weight.

So its def a fake with the bolt on neck? closest to a SN was on the bolt plate 79234. Only paid £80 for it so just about a bargain +:-@

If you paid 80 for her, then she most probably is the real deal... judging by the price she may even be a reissue. +:-@

EDIT: just re-read your last post man... you say the SN was in the "bolt plate" ... by that you mean... the one on the back of the neck-body joint? Or the one that is close to the tuners?

If you are talking about the one on the back, then it may be a marauder or an invader... some folks have pics of them "ewaring" TRCs that say "Les Paul" on them... (aftermarket I guess)

You would be lucky to find a Gibson case for £80.

OK, you don't have a camera. But if you bought it on fleabay can you publish the auction number or link to the auction. Maybe there are some pics. Curious to see your "maybe '59 RI" - at least you didn't anything wrong for £80. I've lost more than $2.000 for a LP58RI last year in a fraud... You grow by learning!

Cheers, Lucy

It was a real auction mainly selling furniture, the reason i had gone, but there was all kinds of odds and sods, set of three 19th century violins went for £60. I wil get some pics, only guessing on model i havent really got a clue.
