alternate tunings?

i never understood alt tunings. do you play the same patterns just as you would in a standard tuning or is there a whole new style of playing involved? i usually just tune down a whole step, for vocal reasons.

I did some G stuff... occasionally D back when I was a kid.

 

The advantage to G also is that you can use banjo G chords on the thing more or less as well as slide.

 

I s'pose depending on your perspective on music you could try some of the old lap steel tunings too...

 

Some of the old bluesies would intentionally not let folks know quite what they were using for open or semi-open tunings...

I strongly believe that if one want some eastern influences, you'd have to tune your guitar, like Bloomfield in "East-West" (though I don't remember what he's tuned in). But I am really curious about alt. tuning, especially if one wants that eastern style. What can I tune my guitar to?
