The JLD Bridge System

E-minor7

Recommended Posts

Wonder if some of you have experienced this device and maybe have opinions 'bout what it does to f.x. sound, volume, compression, sustain. I know it's made to keep the top in shape, but are there pos./neg. sideeffects ? It's all new to me -

I have a serious vintage J-45 here for test the next 7 days, and it has the thing built/screwed in. Sounds incredible – could the JLD play a part. . .

Isn't that a repair system for a bellied out top?

Yep-that would be it!

I sprung for the brass pin-in model, VS the screw-in. I bought it with the intentions of flattening the slight belly (to lower action) on my late 40's LG3. The goal was 'mechanical' as the 'tone' was already there. I left it in 6 months or so....It always bugged me when playing it to see those goofy brass pins on that beautifull bridge!

Never discerned any 'shaping of the top' and always felt that it 'muffled' the tone some, but then again....acoustic guitars are always in a "state of flux". They have good and bad days just like us mortals  !

The really cool thing is.....after subjecting her to that 'torture' for several months....she is "loosened up with better action 'AND' tonally responsive"

SOOOooooooo...In anutshell....I say...If it sounds good "wif it"....IT'll sound better "wiffoutit"

Just spent half an hour removing it. Walked on toes as I wasn't quite sure what I was doing. Pretty easy – and necessary as I have to get a full view of what's goin' on inside the guitar* anyway.

After re-tuning it seems like the old top curves more than it did before. The bridge (a replaced piece of good work) now leans slightly forward and the new angle's lighter string pressure could very well influence the overall sound. The strings of course loose some strength by being off and tuned up again, but I think I hear lesser bass. It was almost overpowering before. I also notice less compression. The guitar acts kinda relieved – you could say closer to its natural self. Guess the logic here would be that the JLD at the same time provides better tone-connection to sides'n'back and inhibits the top-vibration. Without having authorized knowledge on the topic, the system appears to represent a give'n'take dilemma – tone wise.

I will contact a luthier who earlier laid his hands on this instrument tomorrow and hear what he has to say (should have done before moving, but was too curious). Hope he's not on holiday – Will report. . .

*Might talk about this 45 in a separate thread later.
